It sure can. That’s why I brought up the time vault example. Maybe the potential well leads to a crummy place, but there is a point past which it doesn’t feel fun even for the “populist” version. So then that audience is receptive to the idea that MOAR POWUR ≠ more better.

There are several pertinent contexts, though, right? What gets action on MTGO, how the sophistication of cubes progresses in a local play group, what gets into an event like CubeCon, and whether the overall scene is getting larger and more diverse or not. And then the ramifications of each.

I’m not sure I entirely agree with that, given the upper limits on how influential cube can be to the game so long as it’s an ongoing business but also all of experimentation in art and design. I can see where you are going with it, though.

Even that result has interesting limits, though. People did not seem to enjoy the version with time vault et al, and your experiments moving power in and out were educational. When demand is evaluated without nuance, people will always go for the familiar/sugary option.

After “pile of cards we don’t actually own but want to play with” in high school, my first cube was a vintage cube. I still enjoy playing those, but my design interests have definitely gotten more niche and weird.

Yeah, I am almost purely speculation and inference over here. Presuming their actions are rational and knowing they care about cube beyond dollar signs. It would be sweet AF if we could get wilder cubes in parallel.

If the edgy sicko cube draws enough of the vintage cube audience that those numbers decrease in a way that deters the core audience, though, that’s not necessarily free.

The “no holds barred” cube seemed like a ghost town after the first few days. Perhaps the movement towards more interesting and individual designs has hope in the broader audience.

Part of the issue has to be what is popular/profitable from the standpoint of MTGO’s operators. I wonder if this could lead to concurrent cubes with more variety without impacting their sales.

I am elated to draft around ancient cellarspawn. I have that card in two cubes. Even for incidental monster discount pings it would be a delightful time. Also this is a fabulous cube idea.

On June 7, 2024 the Junkies Air Force established a cube for the bottom one percent of its drafters.
Its purpose was to troll the absolute idea of Magic and to ensure that the handful of players who 3-0'd were the sickest fools in the world.
They were success-adjacent.
Today, the Junkies call it Nonsense Camp.

The times I succumb to temptation most often are when there are two combo pieces in the pack. Yesterday I took stifle when dreadnaught was also in the pack and I felt like a million bucks when that 12/12 came back.

Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.
AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations:
