#amquerying authors, I will be closing submissions between November 24-December 27 this year to, ambitiously, aim for inbox zero going into the new year.

I will be opening to queries December 1, 2024! As a reminder, I accept queries ONLY via QM: querymanager.com/MacLysaght

My previous years' #MSWL stand, but some things I’m particularly on the hunt for are:

Bizarre that John Lennon is actually older than him. You'd think they were a generation apart.

I don't enjoy fantasy. Not because I have "no imagination," or think it "immature" and "childish" or for "nerds." I respect the authors and admire how their minds work.

But I didn't like it as a kid either unless it was a cartoon.

I guess I read to find plausible hope in the real world.

Didn't believe it then. Hence we still own vinyl, CDs, DVDs, all the equipment to play it on, external hard drives, two printers and filing cabinets.

No, there's no room in our flat for kitchen table and chairs, but meh.

WHEN LOVE BARGES IN by Bryony Rosehurst: And she couldn’t remember ever noticing the exact color of the autumn sun before, or the smoky smell that lingered on the cusp of the seasons. She couldn’t remember anybody ever looking at her and waiting for her to speak.

She couldn’t remember ever feeling like she truly existed before now. So Piper said the things she’d always been too ashamed to say before. Because she could see her breath in front of her when she exhaled. Because she was here and she could

Day 14: By a band with an animal or place in their name

A double whammy. Not only an animal in the name of the band, but also in the title:

Ooh...you wouldn't want to DM me the agent's name, would you? I lean toward sparse myself and avoid agents who stress "beautiful writing!"
writerlaurabee.bsky.social
True. Although, in my defence, I moved 21 years ago to a country with a different phone number format. 43 years of 7-digit numbers formatted xxx-xxxx to 10 digits including an area code: xx-xxxx-xxxx. I know mine, but still not my husband's. 🤷🏼‍♀️
rincewind.run
the funniest thing about this is that those of us who grew up in the divide all have a bunch of pre-cell phone numbers memorized and almost none afterwards

I know the home phone numbers of two of my childhood best friends from thirty years ago and none of the cell numbers of my college friends

sort of funny that the promise of these "AI assistants" on browsers and stuff is "imagine if you could just type something in and get answers!" Yes, that was called "basic search" and you intentionally enshittified it

Bloody hell, it's noisy outside. I had to do a news search.

Apparently every Rotterdammer of Cape Verdean heritage is dancing in the street or blowing their car horn celebrating their inclusion in the World Cup.

Being an unpopular immigrant is a lonely drag at times.

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Okay, fecking heating guys. If you're going to make up get up at this ungawdly hour to replace our heating system and give us no access to hot water for the next 3 days, the least you can do is SHOW THE EFF UP when you say you're going to.

My 2nd choice was "That's How Strong My Love Is," a decent stab at an Otis Redding song for a beat band, especially the heartfelt vocals by Allan & Bobby's fab drumming. Not a fan of Graham & Tony's "ahhhhhh" backing vocals tho & prefer the Rolling Stones' subtler guitar.
