I called this 'The Watchers'. Four puffins on the Isle of Lunga, Mull, Scotland. They are standing on the edge of a cliff above the camera. The two in the middle have their bodies facing the camera but, their heads turned to the right. the out side pair are side on to the camera, the left hand one is looking to the right, the one on the right is looking back. I chose this because a) It's Puffins b)the way the light rims the puffins and highlights the sea thrift that grows from the rocks and c) The way the four birds stand out against the bright blue sky... and it's Puffins !

157 years ago, on the 9th of December 1868, the world's first traffic lights were installed outside the Palace of Westminster in London. It used semaphore arms during the day and green/red gas lamps at night. It had to be operated by a constable. It exploded on January 2nd 1869. #otd #history 🗃️
Information about the new system. Richard Mayne was the head of the Metropolitan Police. Image reproduced under creative commons licence. POLICE NOTICE. Street crossing signals. CAUTION. The Semaphore Arms lowered and by Night with a Green Light. STOP. The Semaphore Arms extended and by Night with a Red Light. By the Signal "CAUTION", all persons in charge of Vehicles and Horses are warned to pass over the Crossing with care, and due regard to the safety of Foot Passengers. The Signal "STOP", will only be displayed when it is necessary that Vehicles and Horses shall be actually stopped on each side of the Crossing to allow the passage of Persons on Foot; notice being thus given to all persons in charge of Vehicles and Horses to stop clear of the Crossing.
