The WO64 was for the most part a rewrite (a pretty good one IMHO), and yes audio was the reasons for "Please Wait"
The other reason the N64 version was interesting was the analogue stick use, which lent to the PS2/dualshock developments.

I cannot speak for N64, but PS1 - WipeoutXL was an excellent soundtrack. Some FFX similar games too. Although I played these on PS2 more.
