My ongoing request:

If your NSF or NIH grant was terminated--whether at Harvard or elsewhere--please report it here.

NSF: grant-watch.us/submit-nsf.h...

NIH: grant-watch.us/submit-nih.h...

Our trackers are actively used in lawsuits and are often the only record that terminations ever occurred.
NSF appears to be terminating hundreds of its grants to Harvard, per internal sources at NSF and at Harvard. At least one division has had all its grants cut.

UPDATE: We have data on >1000 terminated #NSF grants at grant-watch.us. Thanks to all who have been contributing data the past few days.

We've also added a "Reports" section with some analyses. For NSF, we see that the STEM education directorate has been absolutely pummeled.

Just like how studying gun violence isn’t a violation of the second amendment
This statement from the NSF is insane.

Science is, in essence, designed to separate the true from the false.

Understanding how falsehoods spread is key to the scientific endeavor. It is not a violation of free speech to be proven wrong.

I guess my new collective action study I’ve got in the works to study misinformation won’t be funded :)
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is terminating a bunch of research funding. Much of this is in line with the goal of making sure nothing gets in the way of systemic racism and sexism, but they also explicitly target research on "misinformation/disinformation."

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

Martínez: But what war can be won without funding?

Stanley: You might lose anyway. But you can't win a war unless you recognize it's a war.

Why this Yale professor is fleeing America
NPR's A Martinez asks Yale University philosophy professor Jason Stanley, an expert on fascism, about his decision to leave the U.S. and accept a position teaching American studies in Canada.

I, for one, welcome the “abundance” fight. It shows the left can fight Trumpism while wrestling with how we can be better than we’ve been.

I have no interest in “actually the government has been doing great” liberalism.

I’m one of the 1500 opponent testimonies. The bill is appalling and reflects little to no understanding of how higher education works.

There really aren’t any silver linings with its passing. We should expect to see Ohio State and UC steadily lose top faculty and students.

Ohio will fall behind.

I’m very thankful this book was written, but I’m crushed that it’s a reality.

We need to fix our country.

Tax. The. Rich.
After many years of reporting and writing, the day is finally here: THERE IS NO PLACE FOR US is out today.

I poured everything into this book, and I hope it ignites outrage at the fact that so many people in the richest nation on earth have been deprived of one of the most basic human necessities.

When I taught Sensation and Perception a year ago (for the first time!) the ML illusion jumped out to me as strange and captivating. So glad to see this work from Amir & Firestone!

I didn’t think I’d end up in #academia - after spending ~2.5 years helping to build freemocap. I thought I’d end up in industry.

I applied to ~80 jobs, had ~10 interviews. 1 was in academia, and it was the only job offer I got!

This was over the course of 1 year of interviewing during my postdoc

I’m getting excited for a new semester - paradigms to build, data to analyze, students to coach!

I’m hoping to have my most productive research semester of my career. Not because I’m chasing some ideal of productivity, just because I think it’s the best way to embrace my career stage.

With the semester over I’ve started playing around with Godot (game engine) - I’ve bounced off of it a bunch of times, having relied on Unity so long for work.

Maybe it’s because I’m doing 2D, but I’m loving it now!
