A few flowering gems alongside an industrial estate in Cinderford. And it’s wonderful to see so many bees, bugs and butterflies enjoying the sunshine. #WildflowerHour #ForestOfDean @bsbibotany.bsky.social

Came across this wonderful large patch of toothwort in Wigpool Nature Reserve. Also in flower were violet, wood sorrel, bluebell and wild garlic but I got rather carried away with the toothwort! #WildflowerHour #WoodlandFlora #ForestOfDean #AncientWoodland

This Tulipa elegans rubra has caught the tulip breaking virus hence the beautiful flame-like stripes. Back in the 17thC this ‘broken’ bulb could fetch more than the price of a house in Amsterdam. For us it’s just a lucky surprise in the garden🌷

It was also lovely to see a Red Admiral, a Brimstone, some huge bumblebees and lots of frogspawn 😀🐝

This scrap of blanket bog nr Callander has nationally scarce Tall Bog-sedge, locally scarce Few-flowered Sedge, and rarely recorded fungus Exobasidium oxycoccii.
But Sitka Spruce is invading from the adjacent plantation - action needed whilst the trees are still small!

Looking over a small area of gingery-brown bog next to a road, with colonising Sitka Spruce trees coming from an adjacent mature plantation on the left, and younger broad-leaved woodland plantation on the right Looking over a small area of gingery-brown bog with colonising Sitka Spruce saplings, and young broad-leaved plantation behind The beautiful Tall Bog-sedge (Carex magellanica), a sedge with three drooping clusters of female flowers looking spiky and coloured brown and green, against a background of out-of-focus green vegetation and brownish moss Exobasidium oxycocci, a parasitic fungus of Cranberry, forming upright, swollen, ghostly whitish or pink terminal shoots at the end of the trailing Cranberry stems

Not the best photo but just wanted to share the importance of keeping your garden untidy during the winter so that birds like goldfinches and bullfinches can forage for food. Well that’s my excuse anyway!
