Some of you will know that my main passion is the study of #Clouds and #CloudClassification.

I’ve just found this great image detailing the ten main cloud types (genera) which are further divided into 15 species, 9 varieties, 11 supplementary features and 4 accessory clouds. It’s a complex subject!
Diagram showing the names and heights of the ten main cloud types from the lower stratus and cumulus clouds to the mid level altocumulus clouds and highest cirrus clouds, plus the giant cumulonimbus clouds that extend through all three levels.

Wow is that your image? It’s beautiful! Yes it must be quite emotional to see the sun return after so many months.

At least in Svalbard they get to see the aurora and a bit of wintry weather. Give me that over this anticyclonic gloom any day of the week!

Fascinating for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere to see this.

It’s bringing back strong memories of last winter!

This image captured from #MeteorM2_4 shows how extensive the cloud has been across the southern half of the UK this afternoon. This low cloud is trapped under a warm layer inversion beneath high pressure.

Our high pressure subsidence inversion having impact on weather today

Some high ground areas including Snowdonia, parts of Cumbrian Fells/S'rn uplands/Grampians/NW Highlands poking out above the inversion, through low cloud into sunny skies..15.1C with dewpoint -5.3C Cairnwell

Of course, straight after posting this I recorded 0.6mm overnight!

Apart from a few possible spots of drizzle from next week’s anticyclonic gloom, there’s unlikely to be any measurable #rainfall for the next 7-10 days. Not good for reservoir replenishment!

There is a definite pattern change likely towards the end of the month but when that starts is up in the air. Some models are predicting next weekend whilst others have the high pressure persisting for longer.

I think it depends on which part of Dorset. I believe Bournemouth Water has imposed hosepipe bans more recently but because of our chalk aquifers, Wessex Water hasn’t imposed one since 1976.

Why a hosepipe ban is not needed in some areas
Wessex Water says there are a number of reasons why it looks unlikely a hosepipe ban will be needed.

I noticed this recently too. If we have a dry winter, we could be in real trouble next year.

One of those days when air sinks/ warms adiabatically under the influence of high pressure, creating an inversion..rise in temp with height

Cloud trapped under the inversion giving a chilly day some low lying parts

Places in/above the inversion, eg hills, seeing warm sunshine

As a human I miss the long warm days of summer, but as an astronomer I’m looking forward to the longer (but over recent years, not always clearer) nights.
metoffice.gov.uk
As you may have noticed, nights are quickly drawing in. Most places are losing 4 or 5 minutes of light each day, and through October most of the UK will see day length reduce by 2 hours or more 🌙

Do you enjoy the cosy evenings or miss the longer days?

I just can’t believe that people would even think this as unusual or newsworthy!

A good time for checking those barometers with high pressure in charge

Mean sea level pressure around 1032/1033mb for most

Nice view of the murk affecting Southern England today and the DANA cut-off low affecting SE Spain - red rain warnings issued.

Super gravity waves streaming off the Faroe Islands too!

Virtually no solar production today makes this the dullest day since 20th February!
This dismal cloudy high reminds me of last autumn and winter. I hope this isn’t a taste of things to come…
