NetHack (1987) for roguelikes, though the year's a bit of a cheat since it's been updated many times since then
I actually am curious to know what people think are the earliest video games that have a serious claim to being the best in their genre. Not like “good for the time,” but like genuinely better than anything else out there.

1981 neo noir starring Yūsaku Matsuda that I thought was just pretty good until the last 20 minutes or so, and then, mwah. Wasn't prepared for how comparatively uncool -- almost unrecognizable! -- he was from his '70s flicks. Totally owns it though.

Feeling like we should've all just called it on December 31st tbh. 2025 -- a nice round number to wrap up history with.

You're gonna tell me "2026" doesn't sound fake as hell? Let's stop kidding ourselves

Armature was founded by many of the core Retro folks who made Metroid Prime. A shame their one big original game, 2016's ReCore, didn't quite land. I'd love to see the alternate timeline where they got to make their own stuff instead of dying because Meta decided to put its VR money into AI.
