Had a blast/went a bit mad writing this for @thequietus.bsky.social

On the release of a new compilation of Lou Reed’s 1960s compositions at Pickwick Records, Wayne Gooderham surveys the sprawling solo career that was to come later, and picks out ten key tracks

The Strange World Of… Lou Reed

Ah, yeah, Union Chap for me.

Ooh. I didn’t notice that. Did think Bill Callahan was REALLY out of tune on Cold Blooded Old Times at his recent Earth gig. And then was bemused to read a review praising the “bold new arrangement” (approx). HE WAS JUST OUT OF TUNE!

No broken strings (as far as I could tell) but remember Television’s first comeback gig @ T&C and getting a tad exasperated at them stopping AFTER EVERY SINGLE SONG to diligently retune all their guitars.

I’m not sure where it’s heading tbh. At the mo am just playing a few open mics to get used to it all again. But am hoping to be ready for a support slot or summit of similar length before end of year. And gave started writing again, so… who knows?!?!

(I’ve started making vague movements towards playing live again.)

Yes, anyone capable of tuning by ear on stage automatically gets the stink eye…
wbgooderham.bsky.social
I’m baffled by *anyone* relatively competent on the guitar!

We were saying afterwards how we were all watching him more than we were ol RF.
wbgooderham.bsky.social
Agree. Heavy Stop Making Sense vibes.

Everyone loves Robert Forster’s new guitarist.

Late to the party, I know, but Ghosteen is one album I struggled most to get on with (& I *did* struggle as LOVE Pushing the Sky n Skeleton Tree) but eventually had to give up n give away (“it’s not me, it’s ‘im…”)

Yes, distinctly remember finishing my GCSEs and heading *straight* to HMV Oxford St to pick up Street Hassle (vinyl import (natch)) & the first of the Bob Bootleg Series (cassette (doh!)) Heady days.

Just tripped across this omission from that montage! Lovely single, this was 🤩

Well worth the £3.99 that I see HMV Oxford Street charged me at the time.
Photograph of Baptiste's terrific "Kissing With Your Eyes Open" 7"single (Linear Records LINE05), which had "A Worthy Grudge Is A Beautiful Thing" on the other side.

"All songs written by Baptiste...

Photography: Tony Harris"

No text on front cover, just a black and white photograph from behind of a boy sitting on a plastic chair looking out onto the central London skyline featuring St Paul's Cathedral and plenty of cranes. Not actually dissimilar to the view from my office window...

Aw, God bless ya. (& God bless HMV: am surprised they stocked it!)

Combination of listening to the new Geese album while reading Steven Hyden’s There Was Nothing You Could Do means I now have this song on repeat. (It’s all about the SHOES, man…) youtu.be/Nv7qiB8Q_cM

One for @wbgooderham.bsky.social - with Thomas Mann going out of copyright at the end of this year, the John E Woods translations of his major novels come to Penguin Classics next March.
