[LAUNCH] Today, we officially launch the #WattsUpAfrica continent-wide campaign to advocate for renewable energy, not just as a climate fix, but as a pathway to energy access, sustainable development, and green industrialisation across the African continent. We are rewriting Africa’s energy destiny.

Clean cooking is not a luxury; it must be recognised as a just transition, a human right and a public health imperative.

We must prioritize scalable, affordable, and culturally appropriate solutions such as biogas, electric cooking, and improved stoves.

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, the world’s wind and solar farms generated more electricity than coal plants!

In the first half of 2025, renewables outpaced rising power demand, leading to a small decline in coal and gas use.

If we phase-out fossil fuels, we will have clean energy. If we prioritise renewable energy, we will power Africa. If we phase-out fossil fuels and prioritise renewable energy we can build a sustainable future.

A milestone that deserves way more attention!

This deserves more attention!

Seven countries now generate nearly all of their electricity from renewables!

That's right! 🇦🇱 Albania, 🇧🇹 Bhutan, 🇳🇵 Nepal,
🇵🇾 Paraguay, 🇮🇸 Iceland, 🇪🇹 Ethiopia and 🇨🇩 Democratic Republic of Congo are officially living in the future!

We’re so inspired by their stories, proof that with passion, resilience, and continuous learning, the sky is not the limit, it’s just the beginning.

Stay tuned for our next edition coming soon! 🚀

Watts Up Africa Career Talks Recap

From climbing turbines to installing solar panels, our first two guests showed us what it really takes to power Africa’s clean energy future.
wattsupafrica.bsky.social
If Africa invests in local processing, value addition, and regional cooperation, critical minerals could fuel clean energy industries, create jobs, and drive sustainable development.

The world needs Africa’s minerals but Africa needs a just, renewable-powered future.

As we get into the second week of ACS 2, we demand more action and fewer promises.

100% renewable energy is achievable, but only if finance, investment, and policy put African communities first.

REMINDER: Africa has the potential to become a renewables superpower!

Anyone still pushing fossil fuel expansion in Africa does not have our best interests at heart.

The only smoke in cooking should come from inside the pot.

For too many women across Africa, firewood and gas cooking mean daily exposure to toxic smoke, leading to respiratory illnesses.

#CleanCooking reduces health risks, protects forests, and restores dignity. #DontGasAfrica

But while this growth is inspiring, it also highlights a critical gap: the lack of local manufacturing capacity. Relying heavily on imports leaves Africa missing out on opportunities.

To make this transition just & sustainable, investments must go into building local industries.

Millions of Africans live without reliable electricity, not because we don’t have the resources, but because we’re not harnessing them enough due to:

♻️Inadequate policy frameworks
♻️Insufficient investment
♻️continued reliance on fossil fuels

Energy isn’t just a need; it is hope.

In 2024 alone, 91% of newly commissioned renewable power projects were more cost-effective than any new fossil fuel alternatives, according to IRENA.

Instead of investing in building new coal or gas plants, Africa can leapfrog straight to renewable energy. With supportive policies such as feed‑in tariffs and guaranteed financing, we can unlock private investment and make it happen.

The gap remains because women remain underrepresented in the sector, continue to face technical barriers, and encounter lagging policy that advances unevenly across the world.

Through training, mentorship, and policy, we can ensure women equally power the clean energy transition.

The #EnergyTransition can bring decent jobs, economic growth and a thriving future for young people, if done right

To start with, multilateral development banks must consult youth on decisions about clean energy in their countries

Reports can be rewritten, but can we rewrite the rising sea levels, melting glaciers, and record heat that science has long warned about?

Now is the moment to rewrite our energy story, not our climate reports, and choose a future that is just, resilient, and fossil-free.

TeraMed’s plan to install 1 terawatt of clean energy by 2030 could help prevent 600 million tons of CO₂ emissions.

With up to $700 billion in investments and projected 3 million new jobs in solar and wind, it is more than an energy project.
