In today's Guardian (not online yet) I drew a section cover and column illos for a great piece by @heritage.bsky.social about parents' WhatsApp groups. It was one of those jobs where I got *way* too into details/narrative design, trying to make single illustrations read across page like a comic.
This is a supplement cover and interior illustrations for the Guardian's Saturday Lifestyle section, for a piece about school Whatsapp groups for parents. The scene is a primary school playground, signed 'St Ping's Primary', and at the gates is a mum who's just dropped her daughter off to school. The mum is looking at her school whatsapp on her phone, and above her is superimposed a string of recent messages from the chat. At the top is her message, saying "Finally convinced her to wear the costume", accompanied by a photo of her daughter dressed in a bumble bee costume, looking furious at her mum for making her wear it. Underneath that message, is a series of messages from the other parents trying to tell her it's not fancy dress day today - but the mum is already in the car and doesn't see those messages. So the whole image of the playground has lots of kids at drop-off wearing normal school uniform, all looking at the little girl standing in the middle of the playground in her bee custume, looking furious at her mum who has just dropped her off, and is realising her mistake while reading the Whatsapp. In the interior illustrations, there is a series of parents who have just woken up, all posting to each other trying to work out if it's is swimming lessons today - and then suddenly one of the mums accidentally posts a picture of her privates to the group - then posts "Oops sorry wrong group" and then leaves the group. We see all the other parents looking very surprised.

I had totally forgotten about this number 🤣. What a bizarre record!

I had this record on my eBay wants list for ages, until I realised that I probably didn't actually need to own it - I wasn't going to DJ with it and I obviously wasn't going to listen to it more than a couple of times.
Still, though, the pure absurdity of it. And the helpful practical aspects.

Oh no. Sometimes the obituaries just seem to come in like waves. Generations pass, I suppose. The water gets closer.

NEW! Episode 283 - Night trees of Boggle Hole (sleep safe)

Up the beach from Robin Hood's Bay to the Youth Hostel. A perfect location. No road noise, no planes.

Here's our first episode from this special place. Just the sounds of the trees at night.

Ivor (3) was watching me charge something up using a USB C cable, and he asked if he could plug it in, and I said sure, and he asked which way up it goes, and I was able to proudly say “IVOR IT DOES NOT MATTER WHICH WAY UP IT GOES AND THAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF HUMAN PROGRESS”

It remains a huge shame that this series is so hard to find. Come on BBC, get it up online for a bit, I think a lot of people would like to rediscover it.

@robertwilfort.bsky.social hi Robert - I’ve been trying to locate ‘Grass’ on various streaming channels, but it doesn’t seem to be available. Do you know anywhere it can still be viewed? One of the best comedy series of the last 25 years imho and would love to rewatch it.

An absolute classic in my opinion. Woefully overlooked - should have been recognised in the 2004 honours. With the BBC so rightfully proud of its comedy archive, I can only assume there’s a legal issue behind it. Otherwise, there’s no reason not to make it available. 🤷🏻‍♂️
