Intro:

My name is Bill; I'm a maker of various maps, most built of pixels. 🛰️

I dwell in Vermont's Big City (Burlington, pop. ~42k), and dearly love this place, though Montréal comes in a close second for my affection. ❄️

My politics are of Community and Equality. ✊

Pleased to meet you.

How Google Maps quietly allocates survival across London’s restaurants - and how I built a dashboard to see through it
I wanted a dinner recommendation and got a research agenda instead. Using 13000+ restaurants, I rebuild its ratings with machine learning and map how algorithmic visibility actually distributes power.

In paired settings, FlowEO consistently outperforms image translation baselines both on perceptual metrics and on downstream tasks (classification, segmentation).

It works especially well for SAR-to-optical translation, despite performing flow matching in StableDiffusion's 3 latent space.

Day 29 - Raster
Rhode Island 24K Topo Maps

I have wanted to make a version of this map for some years now. TopoView was a big help in downloading the 24k topos. Clipping and stitching the 38 topos was a pita even with batch processing. I crashed QGIS a few times. lol

I found I still had a couple of the process pic videos for some of my aerial embroideries! Here's one of them - 'The land is a patchwork rainbow', 2023, which was inspired by Dutch tulip fields. This embroidery landscape was so fun to create! 🌈🌷🌸 #art

Nothing like a nice long flight for catching up on #30DayMapChallenge 🤪.

Here's Day 8 — urban — right on time. A map of Paris buildings by age of construction. A real beauty if I do say so myself. 😍

Your (or your employer's) financial support for the PSF would be very much appreciated this year! (And every other year too) bsky.app/profile/pyth...
In the end, it wasn’t a hard decision for the PSF to put our community and our values first, but it does mean we lost out on this large funding source. Donations and sponsorships will help us fill the gap, so we can continue supporting the Python ecosystem and living our values.
