If you want to understand russians a bit better - this thread is the absolutely must read. It summarizes the experience of interacting with them in other more civilized countries with incredible precision.

the system raises and rewards psycos without the sense of right or wrong. the only "wrong" they get to know is "getting caught". so it's logical that the guy is happy to go serve in russian army where you are allowed to do anything without the risk of getting caught.

See you in Ukraine!

Olga Tokarczuk and the members of the Olga Tokarczuk Foundation.

It can also be a turning point in terms of how you feel about what is happening in the country, where no day goes by without people being killed and the air-raid sirens never fall silent. We kindly ask you to visit and meet the people who block out those air-raid sirens by reading your books.

The importance and the courage of you being there in person, having face-to-face conversations with readers, showing your support, the words you speak there, and the passages you read out loud may matter far more than – the obviously important, yet only symbolic – support from abroad.

We appeal for authors, literary agents, and publishers from all around the world to plan their meetings in Ukraine.

It is part of the struggle to return to normality, and evidence of solidarity and support; it can become an effective weapon against propaganda, lies, and the russian aggressor’s attempts to uproot culture.

Unfortunately, the number of international writers visiting Ukraine has dropped dramatically, for obvious reasons. Our Ukrainian friends – authors, readers, and cultural organisers – tell us that they find this absence painful. Every visit by a foreign writer is particularly treasured and celebrated

it is where the audience members meet each other. This creates an extraordinary community. In Ukraine, just like in pre-war times, there are crowds of people attending literary events, and they are perhaps even more engaged.

And finally, it offers a respite from traumatic experiences and the all-pervading fear.
For literary life to develop normally people need to gather around books. According to the principle we uphold, every literary meeting is more than just an encounter between the author and the readers;

In extreme conditions amidst the turmoil of war, literature returns to its foundations, becoming once again a refined and profound means of communication – both with others and with culture as a whole. It creates a sense of belonging to the world, makes life meaningful and grounded.

An intimate and personal encounter with another person’s creative act shows its worth precisely at critical movements, when disputes no longer matter and we don’t feel the constant urge to compare or evaluate that accompany literary life in countries where people are safe and well-fed.

crisis, uncertainty, and fear. The situation in Ukraine makes it plain that for many people reading literature is a vital need in abnormal times.

Urgent appeal to the literary community concerning Ukraine

A war is raging in Ukraine. And yet, against all expectations, its book market is thriving again, already back to prewar levels. In fact, we think it is about to surpass them, thus proving the social role of reading in times of war,

"We appeal for authors, literary agents, and publishers from all around the world to plan their meetings in Ukraine. "

During the recent PEN International’s 91st Congress in Kraków, Olga Tokarczuk made an appeal to the literary community regarding Ukraine. I am posting it below.

I don't think people know how common this is. It's SO common there's an entire Wikipedia article just for civilians being hunted with drones in this one city. And there's a documentary about it called Kherson: Human Safari, directed by @zarinazabrisky.bsky.social
