once again, there's like another better funnier example of this handwritten dialogue in sweet revenge, but the panel is too spoilery without context. oh well ! i guess you'll just have to read it when it comes out next year~ !

re: studio proteus lettering: i am always trying to push my lettering in these scholastic books into a studio proteus hand drawn direction as much as i can/am able. you know, like, not for everything, but especially for characters yelling. it's really present in finding myself with you. it's fun~

A comic book page from SWEET REVENGE, a romcom graphic novel by Victoria Grace Elliott coming out in 2027. An iridescent beaded curtain is opening to reveal a long-haired boy in a fur-lined leather coat singing karaoke to Photograph by Def Leppard. Alex, the main character, peers at him from behind the beaded curtain in horror. Her best friend leans over to whisper "Isn't that...HIM?" The karaoke room is full of their mutual friends, cheering him on and encouraging Alex to join him. "Finally! Alex, get up there!" Suddenly, something clicks for the boy singing karaoke. "'Alex'...?" His face is obscured as he turns to face the main character. The page is left on a suspenseful note.

Christian, the male lead of the YA romance graphic novel Please Be My Star, is in an argument with his childhood friend, Paola. He tilts his head back and with uncharacteristic condescension asks Paola "What the fuck do you know about me?" Paola, holding her tiny dog, is taken aback. As her eyes well up with tears, her puppy licks her face to comfort her. She proudly tries to hold back from crying. "Fine. Okay." She turns away, looking up to keep the tears from falling. "You're right. I don't know you." The gate at the end of Christian's driveway divides him and Paola as she turns to walk back to her house in the sunset. "Do whatever you want," she says, giving up control of Christian. Christian watches her as she walks off. He's ashamed of his sudden outburst. "Shit," he mutters, while knocking his head with his fist.

A cute boy brightly smiles & tilts his head, he's introducing himself to the main character. "I'm Christian." [ I know. I've drawn you so many times. ] the narrator, Erika, thinks to herself. Erika's friend Julie looks at the spread of comics and snacks on the ground in the circle of friends. "You, uh, like comics?" Erika, gripping her fists, looks excited. "I love them." Julie's expression is sarcastic "Of course you do." "Nice. What kinda stuff do you read?" Christian asks. Erika thinks about her favorites. "Ah, well, lots of manga, some webtoons, and lately I've been into old Batman comics." Miguel, another new friend in the circle, approves with a deadpan expression, eyes still glued to his phone. "Oh, hell yeah." Erika, glancing around nervously, asks, "What do y'all (Christian) like to read? (Christian answer this please)" Christian, hand to his chin, is gearing up. "Well. Don't think I'm one of *those* guys but...Watchmen." Miguel rolls his eyes. "Oh, Jesus. Here we go." Christian proceeds to ramble about reading Watchmen, reading the wikipedia entry for Watchmen, and trying to figure out how it's a meta-commentary on comics. Erika seems delighted and confused by the sudden nerdy ramble of the cute boy in front of her. His friends, however, aren't amused. Julie looks annoyed. "Dude, we get it." And Miguel looks pissed. "SHUT UUUUUP." Christian's used to it. He keeps rambling to Erika, excitedly pointing at spreads in the comic, mumbling "9-panel grid" and "It's a comic about comics." Watching him, Erika thinks to herself, [ This isn't exactly...What I was expecting. ] Christian hands her the comic, "You wanna borrow it?" Erika accepts. "Sure??" [ But it's going well, right? ]

i gasped out loud when i saw this at the vintage store – i had never actually seen it in person! i loved recreating the typography & recipes from 𝓣𝓱𝓮 𝓝𝓮𝔀 𝓙𝓸𝔂𝓼 𝓸𝓯 𝓙𝓮𝓵𝓵-𝓞 in Tasty. i'm so giddy i now have a copy of my own that i found by pure chance

old adams extract ad for red velvet cake, the main tagline mysteriously being "RED VELVET, the cake of a wife time" A comic page from Yummy: A History of Desserts by Victoria Grace Elliott (me, the person typing this). The excerpt depicts a couple with a big idea. "The Adamses realized this was it! When they got home, they had a plan. Instead of beet juice, people could use red dye. They made ads for their red dye that included a recipe for a NEW red velvet! The plan was a success, and Adams's company was saved! Soon, people everywhere were making their own red velvet cakes." The comic cuts away from the storybook style back to our narrator, the food sprite Peri. "And that's the origin of the red velvet we know and love today!"

A page about the history of Green Bean Casserole from TASTY: A HISTORY OF YUMMY EXPERIMENTS by Victoria Grace Elliott. The sprite narrator Peri guides us. "In reality, [frozen meals] weren't as popular as their companies wanted them to be." Her expression turns sarcastic. "As it turns out, a lot of people still liked cooking. Wow." She stands on a Cambpell's recipe book. "Campbell's figured this out during its early years. In the 50s, the company began debuting casserole recipes with their soups as the key ingredient." A banner reads GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE • 1955. Peri stands next to a Cambpell's soup can, a bottle of soy sauce, a picture of Dorcas Reilly, and a steaming hot green bean casserole in a cute kitschy red casserole dish. She's licking her lips and taking a deep whiff of the savory dish. "Chefs in the Campbell's lab developed all kinds of recipes featuring these soups. In 1955, Dorcas Reilly created this soon-to-be holiday favorite using ingredients a home could would probably already have at home. This recipe used two key canned ingredients: cream of mushroom soup and green beans. So simple and delicious, people still make it today!"

7th grade sitting in church, i had an existential crisis abt wanting to be a comic artist but not wanting to be broke

i was rejected from an arts school at that time. i tried a lot of things. studied linguistics/RTF, 2+ part time jobs, admin > artist at powerhouse. got to a breaking point tbh!
