Probably not.

Yes.
It's not super common, but like any games Destiny too is a social space so you're bound to run into all sorts of people - Even 'those types'.

Bungie itself has a clear stance against bigots and bullies, but as long as they don't break rules they're just as hared to get rid of as anywhere else.

It might be.
I know there is a massive discount/free to play going on atm because the studio needs the money, so they're throwing stuff out.
But I'm not sure what is on sale on which platform atm.

There will be free to plays roughly once per year, that also always good for trying before buying :)

Pretty much, yes.
You have the 'classes' (Hunter, Warlock, Titan) that have vasty different mechanics, so I would recommend taring them all and find what you enjoy most.
You'll have thee character slots per Bungie account but you can always delete and redo characters, trade items between them etc.

My last tip would be: Find people to play with.
It's a game meant to be played together, and while you can load into activities and planets with strangers too, it's always more fun with homies, especially solving puzzles together or doing Dungeons.

Another tip would be, turn off area text chat and have voice off by default unless you know the people around.
For every 50 amazing, sweet and welcoming Destiny players there will also always be the traditional Republican pissing on people around.
Luckily curating your game is pretty easy.

Find out if you enjoy the game mexhanically and perhaps limit yourself to 1 or 2 DLCs first (I highly recommend Beyond Light or Witch queen for beginners, due to them being self contained stories) before you end up sinking money into a game you might end up not enjoying.

Another tip I'd give would be, don't buy all that there is to buy before getting a feel for the game.
It's been 10+ years, two games, and there have been loads of DLCs, many of them chunky at full price.

My best advice for any new players would be, never be shy to experiment.
You can play the classes, various life forms and you'll get tons of abilities and weapons and part of the fun us finding out new and more things you enjoy using.

Scroll aaaaaaaalll the way to the bottom and you'll see "Text and Image Generation."

TURN IT OFF.
