National public health “leadership” (hi RFK Jr 🙄) keeps poisoning public health with lies.

Vaccines prevent needless childhood deaths.

No baby in America should be dying of whooping cough — not when we have safe, effective vaccines literally ready to go.

This is a national tragedy

Headlines like this are extremely dangerous. Because moms of young kids are the people who make the bulk of the vaccine decisions for famillies. And for a lot of them, "reading the news" looks like scrolling past headlines on social media in the spare moments of the chaos of caring for kids.

I have been reading all the "students these days" threads from various sides and I have an essay's worth of thoughts -- there's a lot of complexity and heterogeneity that is hard to communicate on social media. There are a couple of things I will say here though. 1/

Unvaccinated infants are the second most likely group to get hospitalized for Covid after older adults. Any effort to minimize the effectiveness for kids is evil.

I saw a video circulating showing an amish lady making an easy cream of mushroom soup from scratch. And that's cool. I love cooking from scratch. But time is money.

I fear this soup stupidity will feed into the current mommy wars and the increased labor on women.
Actually, it's fine if you use that can of Campbell's cream of mushroom soup in your holiday recipe or occasionally eat a bowl of their chicken noodle soup. I say occasionally only because of the high sodium.

A quick reminder that nobody can agree on what "ultra-processed" means.

Exactly, pressure them to commit to fix shit and primary the ones that don't.

Then hold them to their word, aggressively.
I find the 'the Democrats won't do anything' doomer line annoying, because the Democrats will be who you make them - look how much the GOP changed over the past decade!

Right now the party feels immovable but the moment it has a presidential nominee, it will be whatever that person is.

Find full details on our blog post.
Microgrants Temporarily Paused
Unfortunately, the Black Trowel Collective Microgrants is paused again due to the program losing its non-profit status in the US. This status was required for maintaining our US PayPal Business account, which we use to accept, hold and disburse funds. Without it, we’re unable to manage the account or process any payments. We’re currently exploring how to get our non-profit status reinstated, but until that happens, we’re unable to accept new applications.

The problems with academic publishing in one graph. The big for-profit publishers get product for free and sell it back to us. Their profits rival those from the big tech companies. This is money that could have supported research, teaching and graduate students.

It's a tiny amount of money ($25K, $12K when I was a student), but the consequences are huge. e.g., Years ago, this funding enabled me to conduct my PhD research, which ultimately informed the Supreme Court litigation that prohibited patents on human genes.

Talk about undone science.
NEW from me - NSF cancels grant scheme for social science research.

Seems the NSF quietly archived ALL calls for DDRIG grants in the SBE directorate. This is a massive blow for PhD students wanting to do cutting-edge social science research. 🏺🧪

I URGE people to publicize (if you don't live there) & show up (if you do live there) for this special election and vote for Aftyn.

I have a lot of family who live in this district, some of whom have been working hard w/campaigning. It's NOT a lost cause conservative district. It can be flipped!
Y'all, this race is going to come down to who shows up at the polls. Trump carried this district by 22 points, and @aftynbehn.bsky.social is within 2 points in this poll!

If you live in 7, GO VOTE! Today is the last day of early voting, or you can vote on December 2nd.

I'm co-leading a bipartisan coalition to urge Congress to reject Big Tech’s efforts to prevent states from enforcing AI regulations.

States should be able to enact their own regulations and protect its residents from AI's risk to children, public health, the economy, and more.

This. Plenty of people would prefer that women be our only social safety net.
Look, women no longer do shit for free is actually at the root of a lot of social disruption. The question is whether you think the solution is women going back to being unpaid and unprotected by their own labor.
