I don't believe in ghosts, monsters, vampires, demons, or whatever in real life. But when I open up a book or the lights dim in the cinema as the curtains open, my imagination welcomes the magic in & I want to believe for that short time. I don't need that "based on a true story" crap to be scared.

Trying to make sense of the first paragraph here. Because I am scared by things that I know are not real all the time. Do you need to believe in ghosts (or demons, or gods, or evil pixies) to be scared by them? I don't think so.

I had such a spiritual experience seeing @realgdt.bsky.social Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein at The Paris Theater with my 83 yr old Dad. Walking a weird divide between real Hollywood history and mad scientist hokum, How To Make A Monster is light, enjoyable fun for monster movie fans. And it's interesting in how it seems to predict the future of horror cinema in one scene. When a friendly studio chief comes to say goodbye to Dumond, he tells the makeup man not to worry, as the horror boom is bound to return with the success of just one picture, "maybe one of those foreign imports." As this was a year after Hammer Films' The Curse Of Frankenstein became an international success and did bring back horror movies in a big way, that character was absolutely right. Maybe Dumond should've just forgotten revenge, packed his bags for England, and worked for Hammer.
