On the 10-year anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, my research in the Yatu Lab continues to engage with Calls to Action 10, 12, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22, and 23, which focus on Indigenous education, language revitalization, health equity, and Indigenous-led health systems

As research on Indigenous rights, equity, diversity, and inclusion is being halted in the U.S., scholars in Canada have a responsibility to respond. This winter break, I am prioritizing research and writing. Silence is not a neutral position 👩🏽‍💻✍🏽

Some may not see the challenges we face. Denialist groups, motivated by hate, are anticipated to target UBC in the new year. The Longhouse will serve as a secure refuge for Nenqayni students, staff, and faculty. Campus Security is alerted. Stay calm, grounded, and safe 🙏🏽

While Canada’s residential school era has become a key piece of our national identity, there has been an eruption of late of what some academics call denialism.

That eruption & efforts to counter it, is the focus of the new episode of APTN Investigates:
Denialism close-up - an APTN Investigates
APTN Investigates Dismantling Denialism by correspondent Christopher Read delves into residential school denialism.

I was getting ready to speak at the World Congress on Adolescent Health next week. But Hurricane Melissa — the largest storm in the world right now 🌏, fueled by our warming oceans and climate change — has put everything on hold. Sending love, prayers, and strength to Jamaica 🙏🏽💚🇯🇲

AI like Grok can ‘learn’ fast but so can spreading misinformation and systemic bias. Grok isn’t neutral. Unchecked AI on social media can amplify bias and inequality faster than any human ever could. Which platform will be next?

Musk: X will delete all heuristics from its recommendation system within six weeks. ...the familiar logic of likes, replies, and reposts that shaped Twitter for years is about to disappear. In its place, Grok, the platform's in-house Al model, will read and watch more than one hundred million posts.
Brace for another wave of x refuges

ICE recruitment ads on Spotify? Not for us. Yatu Lab is looking for podcast platforms that reflect our values and support our communities ✊🏽

Where do you listen to podcasts? I’d love your suggestions!

Some good news 🎉 One of my grad students in the Yatu lab was awarded a small Truth and Reconciliation grant! She’ll be creating podcasts to share racialized early childhood educators’ voices and their decolonizing learning journeys. Stay tuned 😄

Today was devoted to research budgets. It’s slow-going work, but progress is being made. Dinner was ramen with an egg and leftover turkey—a modest, satisfying way to end the day 🍜

I just sent 8 emails to people who asked if I could supervise their PhDs. It’s so hard saying no — they’re all amazing students — but I don’t have the capacity right now. I’m trying to hold spots in my Yatu Lab for folks whose research really aligns with my own projects 📚

I missed this webinar but want to watch it later when things slow down. It’s part of the Faculty of Education Dean’s distinguished speakers series. Dr. Leanne Simpson recently wrote the book, Theory of Water (great read) 👀

Today I prepare dinner, not to celebrate the colonial history of Thanksgiving, but to give thanks in my own way — for family, friends, community, and the land and waters that sustain us 💙 Thanksgiving is not Nenqayni, yet gratitude remains central to our lives 🫶🏽🧡

Every year, one white man in teacher education program repeats the script: tired of apologizing, denies colonialism, claims no privilege. And every year, we faculty debrief—unpacking, soothing, strategizing. Same dance: cleaning up what colonial denial leaves behind 🙄

Very first Yatu Lab 🌊 Rooted in the Nenqayni Chi’h word for ocean/deep water, we’re building a space for youth, communities, educators, and researchers to connect. Our first session flowed from nerves to lively talk on AI in grad research—Yatu’s spirit of curiosity + connection alive🩵
