Baubi Urquhart of Yell, Shetland: "photographs of Baubi were once used to illustrate two quite different stories – one about folklore, specifically tales of ‘seal women’ or ‘selkies’ from the Northern Isles of Scotland, and the other about women’s work in the rural economy of the 19th century."
The Story of a Seal-Woman from Shetland – MAA Digital Lab
Baubi Urquhart’s portraits tell two stories—mythical ancestry and rural industry. Eona Bell explores how this woman embodied both in 19th-century Scotland.

Studies have already shown that fake smiling and surface acting (pretending to be happy when you're not) produce a very short-lived dopamine boost. Long term, it's actually horrible for your mental health, even if you're not openly neurodivergent.

True fact: unmasked, I am not a smiler. Do not make me "smile more"
I can promise everyone on this planet, nobody wants to see neurodivergent people like me try to "smile more." For everyone's sake, don't make us do this.

...& what a relief that is.
CPTSD is going to try to convince you that your involuntary thoughts, feelings, & reactions "define" you-- but they don't. They are evidence of your conditioning-- no more, no less.

We are defined by our thoughtful, values-congruent choices, not our unchosen reflexes.

My quality of life has massively improved since I shifted the way I listed to music, by ditching streaming & reverting to CDs. Seriously! Better sound, more conscious listening, burden of choice relieved. Oh, and NUMBER ONE: artists get paid more.

The only pain in the ass is the initial outlay.

I love stim culture for embracing our bodies’ rhythms. But we need to talk about how racialized surveillance changes what ‘safe stimming’ means. Not all of us can stim in public without fear

Prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba has long called prisons “death-making institutions.” The rise in incarceration coupled with the nation’s lax approach to Covid-19 makes this characterization (yet again) a frighteningly accurate prophecy.

Shake me + I'll rattle no.1: 10 days til I see consultant psych (awkwardly, a friend's husband...classic Shetland situation) & certain he'll agree to a Pregabalin reduction. Manic depressive jangles eradicated vs. being able to fully focus. In this game the choices are frustratingly endless.
