"dragged myself through" is definitely the experience I had with that thread as well lol. I can't stand when people start posturing as "the business understander" and you read their reasoning and it's just vulgar econ 101 thinking
Like if that IS the problem, that people just won't spend the money for no reason, this is still the business's responsibility to solve. Make smaller more sustainable games. Fewer GTA 6s and more Like a Dragons
The correct analysis is that companies should spend responsibly so that they can earn money worth the investment. They don't do that because of the escalatory nature of media production under capitalism. Not because consumers are withholding money because they have weird principles or whatever
Such a condescending tone to take for such simplistic thinking. "I googled it and determined you actually can afford to spend $100 on your hobby." Like how do you even get mad on behalf of higher costs lol that's such a strange thing to do
There's also the trend true of any capitalist enterprise to produce bigger products with broader appeal more cheaply and efficiently regardless of the change to quality. You can't sit here and pretend like video games or other mass media don't also interface with that phenomenon
Besides the implicit naivety about how these companies are run, this argument also accidentally runs into weird right wing pro-business economic posturing. "Hey idiot I looked it up you actually have more to spend than you claim!!!" Are you sure? Have you seen these rent increases?
Wages have gone up at a far slower rate than essential spending has. There is an ongoing cost of living crisis. Businesses charge the maximum they can for their products, they're not NOT charging more because they're so polite or afraid of gamers or whatever is being implied here
I understand the argument, but in trying to close the circle on the "you should want to pay more for games because they cost more" idea, this person uses the modest increase in overall US wages as if there is a binary 'have more/spend more' relationship between wages and leisure spending
AAA video games should cost $100 on launch. this would still be extremely cheap for the amount of time and enjoyment you get out of them! But an audience of whiny babies has kept them literally at the same price for *two decades* despite both general inflation *and* sector-specific costs rising
I love to start Monday with a hot, fresh cup of nutritious functional coffee substitute
Tariffs have rapidly increased the price of coffee—a drink with almost no nutritional value and lots of functional substitutes. Yet coffee may also be the one thing Americans can’t live without, @elcush.bsky.social writes:
The Drink That Americans Won’t Give Up Without a Fight
Coffee has almost no nutritional value and lots of substitutes. It’s also, apparently, too important to lose.

No - the author perceived a dip in quality of the songwriting and lyrics and expressed her feelings about that. Your argument implies that it should be impossible to do cultural critique of pop stars because they write pop music. If you feel that way then don't read the criticism
It's nuts. The most fundamentally incurious audience ever. Go to any subreddit full of people who primarily engage with just one series as their main hobby, or even just *one game,* and 99% of them know nothing at all about it besides its most absolute surface-level qualities

Today is a day when arts degrees are worthless, but the product of those degrees is so valuable it would kill an entire industry if they were made to pay for it.
Just saw someone post an AI-generated Jelly Roll/Lady Gaga collab performing soul music. Probably the bleakest thing I've seen today
A WaPo non-opinion piece casually referring to a gov organization's "sacred duty" in a story that manufactures consent for defunding the VA strikes me as a pretty bad sign for the near future of US journalism
Exclusive: Military veterans are swamping the U.S. government with dubious disability claims that are exploiting the country’s sacred commitment to compensate those harmed in the line of duty, according to a Post investigation.
How some veterans exploit $193 billion VA program, due to lax controls
The Department of Veterans Affairs spends billions on dubious and even fraudulent disabilities benefits. Meanwhile, some deserving cases wait.

They made my existence into an "issue" then complained I'd become a single issue voter
You just made that up lol "guardians" and "protectors" are not antonyms for friend. It sounds like you have an authoritarian parenting style and this is how you justify it to yourself
Man. That's wild. To what end?? Lmao I don't get people who do this at all
Why did you just copy the phrasing of this sentiment from this other person's post almost verbatim lol what a strange thing to do
This 'bottom of the barrel memes for a Gavin Newsom presidency' thing is top 3 most embarrassing strains of liberal discourse of all time. Unfunny, completely non-sequitorial and off-putting, implicitly throws the most vulnerable people in society under the bus, and repulsively psychosexual
Gavin Newsom responds to a completely fake Vanity Fair cover being spread by MAGA, who think it is real
Huh, that's interesting. Obviously you know more about the research than I do. But isn't that a distinction without a material difference? Ideology supercedes everything else, so whether or not the incuriosity is 'true' or 'motivated' it seems like you end up back at incuriosity either way
Disagree. Basic incuriosity is necessary to uphold fascistic ideology. Any movement predicated on dehumanization needs to condition a certain level of learned incuriosity in its people in order to function, otherwise too many incongruous details emerge. Hence all the censorship and book burning
If you find this amusing or politically useful in any way you have a fucking sickness. So gross and weird
Like look at this shit. Knuckle dragging psychosexuality just exploding out of this image in support of one of the most illiberal liberals in power
