SCANDALOUS! Victorian critics found William Blake Richmond’s “The Bowlers” (1870) overtly homoerotic and boldly sensual. The physical closeness, soft gazes, and affectionate poses made the scene feel intimate rather than heroic or moral, far too daring for its era.

Posted this because I liked it and my freshman college year Russian still leaves me with the origin of this word. "почему", meaning "why". Making it a remembrance of the refrain of 'why' from my youngest step daughter......repeatedly. Grin.

My imagination tells me he may have been a Selkie.......a beautiful changeling. Though German, perhaps he swam from Ireland and ended up in the Rhine River and switched in his cradle. When you watch his work you know he was a changeling. Sylph.

“..from way before he made his first film [in 1966]”

I do remember German beaches and pools were pretty loose about personal coverings even then - perhaps especially then

Cannot wait to see what Josh O'Conner and Paul Mescal do with these characters. Hermanus directed "Moffie" brilliantly and brutally so I've high hopes for the film. Remembering that Brokeback Mountain was also 'merely' a short story.
@royalblood1.bsky.social If you've not read it, get a copy of The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck. A phrase that is deceptively simple. "I don’t think I’ve ever been happier——in the plain, dull way that resists any further articulation." About his brief love affair in his youth. Never surpassed.

Simple and brilliant writing that blew me away.
Hands down: The History of Sound by Ben Shattuck. It starts with a gay love story in 1915 and just keeps getting better. His storytelling is *chefs kiss*

This book is spectacular.

This is brilliant and heart rending writing. Do not miss it.
if you have not yet, go read this ASAP. The stories are linked in incredible ways. The title story is currently being made into a film w/Paul Mescal&Josh O’Connor. But don’t just read the first- it connects importantly to the last.

"My grandfather once said that happiness isn’t just a story. So there isn’t much to say about those first weeks." and "I don’t think I’ve ever been happier——in the plain, dull way that resists any further articulation." I wept out loud. .
The title story here is one of the best things I’ve ever read. Writing so beautiful it will make you cry.

First exposed to Reggae while creating costumes for a part of the Opera Falstaff at the Opera Company of Boston long ago. The Set department where I was concocting party costumes played the music and I was mesmerized and totally carried away. So this is another sad milestone ...............

We heard by word of mouth iat school he'd been shot. Went to class (Santa Ana Valley High School). Teacher didn't lecture. We heard the classroom phones ring down the long hallway, one by one. Ours rang. Told he'd been killed. School was cancelled; we were sent home. The world changed.........
My first political memory - exactly 62 years ago right now, a 4-year-old boy trying to understand his mom's tears - is still the biggest event in my lifetime. We still (IMO) don't *really* know who killed JFK, but we know the public's trust was shattered. It's a straight line to today's mess

Today fettuccine Alfredo with sweet sausage & mushrooms. Fettuccine was the fresh kind so it cooked easily &quickly. As I poured the sauce over pasta a lump came in my throat because I believe food is love & I’d no one to share this with.
