This feels like an underappreciated problem:

"Of more than 700 locations sampled, 61% exceeded aquatic life thresholds set by the EPA...60% of samples blew past the accepted healthy drinking water standard."
High levels of road salt in Pa., N.J., Del. pollute streams months past winter
Road salt applied during winter storms runs off into the groundwater and emerges in surface water streams months later. Advocates say roads can be made safe with less salt.

At the NJ Bike Walk summit today, great to hear NJ DOT commissioner Fran O'Connor commit to 1) revisiting the $11B Turnpike widening into Jersey City in light of the overwhelming community opposition, and 2) commitment to zero road deaths by 2040. Bravo 👏

Northeast Corridor riders will face delays as work on this N.J. bridge continues
Trains will use the first track of a new Portal Bridge in 2026, but the change will cause some pain for NJ Transit and Amtrak commuters first.

Breathe easy, New Yorkers!

New data from Cornell University shows congestion relief cut air pollution by a whopping 22% within the zone. That's on top of pollution rates declining earlier this year in places like South Bronx & Staten Island.

New York City Congestion Fee Cuts Pollution by 22% in Toll Area
Pollution in parts of Manhattan declined by 22% in the first six months of this year after motorists began paying a new toll to drive south of 60th Street, according to a Cornell University analysis.

Cars don't fit in FiDi, and they're not needed:

"Almost all subway lines and the PATH trains from New Jersey converge on the neighborhood, and 78 percent of households in the City Council district don’t own a car, while 85 percent get to work on foot or on transit"
Planners have floated projects to curb motor vehicles from the Financial District's narrow roads for at least half a century, but a lack of city leadership and pushback from big businesses have stymied the dream for an area that continues to favor a minority of drivers.
'No Better Place': Mamdani Must Pedestrianize Financial District - Streetsblog New York City
Residents of Lower Manhattan have been demanding pedestrianized streets for decades, but the city and Big Business keep thwarting them. Sounds like a job for Mayor Mamdani.

The majority of work days in December are Gridlock Alert Days. Governor Hochul could get rid of holiday traffic, simply by telling the MTA to use this power they already have.

Instead, she's leaving commuters stuck in terrible traffic.

I mean - New York City should be seeing improvement not just "no change" - Congestion Pricing needs to increase, in order to stave off the increase of driving everywhere else. This is a good first step, but we need to be bolder if we want to see real improvement. London improved by 10% since 2024.
Congestion pricing is working.

It's providing money for needed transit upgrades.

It's lowering traffic, making bus rides faster.

And of course, its' making New York streets safer and more enjoyable for all.
BREAKING: traffic is getting worse around the country — but not in NYC.

Why? Because the congestion relief program is working.

Traffic congestion grew this year in U.S. cities, but NYC saw no increase
Baltimore and Philadelphia saw the largest increases in traffic delays. Congestion pricing may have helped keep New York City traffic in check.

A few weeks ago, PATH announced a series of service expansions that will finally reverse this trend. Though paired with a rather steep fare increase, these changes will finally put weekend PATH service levels above where they were 25 years ago. Huge congrats to all the advicates who made this happen

There’s so much discourse about megaprojects it sucks the air out of the room for everything else. I thought I’d list several smaller transit projects ideas in New Jersey, some of which come from NJT’s famously ambitious 2000 strategic plan (pictured) and some of which are mine or others’ ideas.

Stuck in traffic today?

As part of the congestion pricing legislation, New York has the power to free the zone of traffic jams during Gridlock Alert Days by dynamically increasing the congestion pricing fee by 25%.

But Governor Hochul directed the MTA *not* to use this power.

This Union is behind the Turnpike Expansion. They are the only constituency who showed up in support of the project at the "info sessions" and the community meeting. Jobs are important, but these workers deserve more than a poison pill, better jobs than worsening asthma and destroying communities.
Does anyone have worse political instincts than this guy? You can thank his union if we finally get the stupid turnpike extension killed.
