Sometimes I write stories about things that should be beautiful, such as friendship, and turn them into a kind of nightmare. "Self-Defense" is about the friendship between two young men, and, of course, murder.

One way to feel old is to have your Google acct decide to use the profile pic you used 15 years ago instead of your current one and everyone in the Zoom call is like "Wow, that does not look like you AT ALL." 👍👌👍👴

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.
So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

Having a dog can be good because they really don't give a shit about anything but squirrels and balls and weirdos staying out of their yard. "Oh, are the online's bad today? Buck up, mister, its time to go for a walk!"

I have a story out in the latest edition of Rock and Hard Place Magazine. It's called "Heist at The Picker's Paradise," and its about a couple who rope their dog into a heist at a flea market. Things go sidewise, wouldn't you know it?

Not to worry folks, if AI hallucinates our summer reading lists we can just have it hallucinate the texts into being and then we can have AI hallucinate the cliff notes and we can all pretend to have read the hallucinations. Where there's a fake will, there's a fake way. 👍

The new Neil Halloran documentary on Smallpox has completely changed how I see the RFK Jr. version of the world. Neil (softly) argues that realizing that disease isn't the fault of the sick /or/ the fault of the Gods ushered in a new future where we felt the authority to care for each other.

Something charming about those people with FB accounts they don't use so their timelines are just a series of people wishing them happy birthday each year.

Something strange about getting older is that a teen can just decide to get into the era when you came of age and just mainline it for 2 weeks straight and move on and you're just like "That's...that's not how I did it..."

the things it banned were so horrifying that people straight up don't believe they were real

Coincidentally read this part of Terry Pratchett's "Guards! Guards!" over lunch. (My first Pratchett book.) Here, the soon-to-be-former heads of the city are realizing there's a new monster in charge, each wishing one of the others would stand in protest. I heard Pratchett was incisive, but dang. 👀

Once you notice it, you can’t unsee it: a lot of Dem political strategy is driven by narcissistic self-absorption, the belief that people are paying attention to Dems ALL THE TIME, and thus all Dems have to do is figure out how to be their absolute best selves and they’ll win a bunch of votes.
Saw a "Democratic strategist" say "we have to earn people's trust back." Just mind-boggling that so many don't understand how this works.

Did voters in 2024 say "I trust the Republican Party"? No. They were mad at those in power. Democrats have to get them mad at Republicans. It's not complicated.
