Would love to hear from anyone in #PEI, even after today, the final day of #WeekWithoutDrivingPEI.

Thanks to everyone who participated, who wanted to participate and reflected on what it means to be a non-driver in Charlottetown.

See you next year!

The key is not to expand the space available to carsβ€”that produces sprawl and unwalkable, unlivable cities.

When you restrict the car space, and prioritize space for more efficient modesβ€”that’s when you discover you have space left over for living.

β€œI live my life without a transit schedule, and I like it.”

That’s a great, succinct statement about the benefits of frequent service.
The #1 piece of advice that TransLink's CEO offers other North American transit agencies:

Provide frequent service

Lake City Way, Seattle
Had to wait for a gap in the traffic to squeeze around cars parked blocking the sidewalk

As a non-driver, the #WeekWithoutDrivingPEI reflects what everyday life is like for me.

My mobility depends on the bus schedule. Having more daily tripsβ€”both in the city and rural areasβ€”and adding weekend service for rural routes, would truly be life-changing.

A few questions related to today's:
~Do you use different modes depending on where you're going?
~Do you use one more more in a certain season?
~Does the mode you choose depend on your destination? Why?
πŸ€” Ask yourselves: What's the change you want to see?

~ How much planning did you have to do to figure out how to get from A to B (maybe C) and back?
~ What ideas did you get along the way?
~ What sense of freedom did you get from using the modes of travel that you did?

~ Where are you going today?
~ Will you walk, cycle, roll, carpool, take the bus?
~ What combination of modes did you choose?
~ Was your 'travel' pleasant, easy? Why?
~ Or was it complicated, time-consuming? Why?
~ What about cost?

One of the things that really stands out during #WeekWithoutDriving is the β€œtime tax” of it taking 3xs as long to get anywhere without a car.

Rack & roll to a meeting in Kanata. This stop needs a sidewalk and accessible bus pad.

End of trip facilities matter

For a TINY fraction of the cost of car parking we could be investing in real solutions that unlock the potential of mobility equity.

A disproportionate # of people w/a disability depend on non-car mobility. For folks in a wheelchair, temp regulation is especially critical and challenging.

Every bus stop without a shelter in Minnesota is a policy failure.

Shade and warmth are not luxuries.

My great aunt lives the life I hope I get to live at her age: independent, out every day talking to her friends and neighbours, enjoying daily activity and fresh air. When we build communities where people can get around safely outside a car, everyone wins! #WeekWithoutDriving

Living in car-centric PEI, I wish our elected representatives and municipal & provincial land planning departments would understand the freedom and flexibility that public transportation offers.

G'day #Charlottetown! We'd be keen to read your answers!
How does the way you get around town say about the city's & province's priorities for our community?
Is walking always easy & pleasant?
Is cycling always safe anytime, anywhere?
Is taking the bus convenient & efficient?
