I feel strange learning vocabulary from my 10 year old.

"Dad, where's my ombre cup?"

Me: "WTF is an hombre cup, and this whole thing sounds questionable"

Corporate welfare anyone?
Buried in the tax bill: "no State or political subdivision thereof may enforce any law or regulation regulating artificial intelligence models, artificial intelligence systems, or automated decision systems during the 10-year period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act."

Was listening to Cattle Decapitation while mowing the lawn today. Trippy moment when I realized the double kick parts were in synchronized tempo with the lawn mower blades.

I love the term "slopsquatting". Some cyber security researcher nailed that one.

Also, agents have their uses, but just read a little, just a little about supply chain attacks before you let an LLM add dependencies to your code without vetting them. Come on.

Upcoming Seattle storms aside, I am working for the first time in 2025 on my back deck instead of my office with a 🔥 pit, some good music and some spring smells instead of the office, and I. Am. Here. For. It.

How tech work should be done if you want to stay sane

The tension between copyright and LLMs can never be resolved in a traditional matter, because the training process can't keep any correlation between the model's behaviors and the source data.

The only accurate source to site for a prompt response would be the entire training set.

I've been watching the Sopranos, only a few decades late. The problem is that these days, i feel Tony's chronic anxiety in my bones.

We released version 1.0.0 of a new Java Client SDK for exchanging ambient-adjusted line ratings with TROLIE servers. I'm pretty excited about it.

Well. This is gross
Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told reporters Tuesday that the administration plans to offer a “gold card” that would confer legal residency to foreigners at a cost of about $5 million.

I just came into possession of a 30" gong made by a company called Dobani. Never heard of them, and can't really find anything online. Can anyone tell me anything about this gong? Sounds nice to me, but I'm a rock/metal drummer and can't say I would know better. #drums #percussion

"Tory you know tech stuff, right? Can you help me with something?"
"Sure"
"We have this printer.."

A sophisticated cyber attack sometimes starts with compromising logs or monitoring tools. Cut off the visibility before you engage in the REAL attack.

So, why shut down the CFPB? Spidey senses should all be tingling.

Turns out I can scroll Bluesky while doing some double kick exercises. Apparently not type a post though.

Once the tempo goes north of 180bpm, then it's all off the table. Apparently including breathing, need to work on that. #drums #metal

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world.

Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

I know my 10-year-old doesn't smoke weed.

She said she was hungry and handed me a bowl of crushed lime-flavored chips with salt and pepper, and asked me to cook it into fried eggs. Apparently it was good.

Do I know?

NIH-funded scientist here, anyone in science knows how hard & stressful this job is competing for grants in administrations that support & believe in science. I am numb knowing what this administration is about to do to our jobs, our progress as a nation in science and medicine. We will not recover.

This anti-DEI stuff is lunacy. After 20 years of a great tech career, the best and most successful teams (and honestly, best friends) include people who dont think like me and I am still learning to understand. A good contributor may finish tasks, but complementary teams move mountains
