Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

From the depths of my childhood, I have associated 'woah' with this dog and only this dog. (You can throw in a 'u' if you're feeling French)
Tintin's dog, Snowy, running and barking. His barks are spelled 'Wooah'.

Everyone else is doing it.
The September 30th/October 1st meme where on the left is a cheerful image (September) and to the right a darker or at least less cheerful image. (October)

I have chosen two pictures of myself. September is cheerful, striding towards camera with a big peace symbol statue behind me, bedecked with flowers. To the right, I am staring balefully while covered in blood. The blood one is from a TV show but the left one is my usual idiot self.

I've got my dog wearing that.

Today's fashion reminder: I can wear my wolf T-shirt OR my camouflage trackpants but I should not wear BOTH my wolf T-shirt and camouflage trackpants.

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

Last night (while watching Little Women (2018)) I thought Beethoven's "Pathétique" sounded singable, but I couldn't find any history of lyrics.

This morning, "Blue. Smiles along with you" popped into my head and I went, "Oh. Right."

[this is a niche post. Flagging for too Canadian and too 1980s.]

ad for the cluster collection featuring 3 pendants in orange, turquoise and red that look like clusters of fish eggs ad for the collage collection featuring 1 worry stone and 2 pendants in overlapping mixed colors and patterns. they're made from layering swirling cane ad for the earring collection, featuring round dangly earrings in pink/yellow, blues, and yellow/orange/black ad for the brushstroke collection featuring a purple bolo tie, blue cufflinks and a teal green and white circular pendant. they all are made from multicolor cane that looks like i got a paintbrush and put a few different colors on it and sort of squiggled it around, but that's just how glass made like this looks, no paint is involved.

the background of all these ads is a very light version of a photo of a dragonskin pattern i made for another project. it gives them a little bit of extra dimension and character.

Heeeeere's Jojo!
A plastic barrier being used as a doggie gate. It has various holes in it and through one of them is peeping an eye a nose and an ear of a curious white Pomeranian.

Nope. Lots of background in Halloween costumes, though.

Robert Redford playing a gentle incarnation of death, coming for a frightened old woman in The Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark" (1962). An extraordinary performance then, terribly bittersweet today

“I asked Grok” “I asked ChatGPT” Yeah, well I asked my mother what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here's what she said to me.

Okay, I very much enjoyed Dexter: Resurrection. And here's the thing. I've never seen the original Dexter or the two spin-offs.

I'm like the guy who goes, "Hm, I've never seen anything Star Trek. I think I'll start with 'Picard'."

These are strange times for men named Al.
I don't know what to tell you.
Maybe spell AL in all caps until this mania crashes.
