As Thanksgiving approaches, I am thankful for this place, and the community that gathers here.

The last year would have been truly intolerable without it.

My best to you and yours!

Remember yesterday when I said we'd see a dramatic escalation of their threats and intimidation bc we are hitting the Extinction Burst and the desperation of the regime reaches a fever pitch as they're losing their grasp on power? Yeah.

We don't back down when the regime is in its death throes.
Did Tr*mp just call for the death of veterans serving in Congress?

This is a good article, and touches on something AI supporters miss: human cognition is rooted in our meat. While an airplane doesn't need to flap its wings to fly, human thinking takes, well, humans - our specific meat. Other kinds of 'thinking'? The article covers that pretty well.

Truly amazing long essay. AI, Turing, Godel, old timey thoughts on thoughts and thinking. Free will and computability. They don't write essays like this anymore. Except this one!

Even by the standards of the past year the moral injury this week has been overwhelming.

May these women find justice. May all girls and children be safe and get the leaders they (and all of us) deserve.

The right is torn in two these days:

1) Do we call for vigilante violence against men alleged to have sexually pursued children and label them the worst possible criminals?

or,

2) Do we defend, praise, and devote our unquestioned loyalty to a president who is known to sexually pursue children?

Legislation creates a Federal Tax Escrow Account in the state treasury. Instead of employers forwarding collected federal taxes to Washington, they send them to the state. The state holds the money in escrow. A legislative panel reviews federal spending for constitutional compliance.

Bluesky suspended Sarah Kendzior today for no reason whatsoever. She just shared excerpts of her articles, which were as always incisive and not offensive at all. Hey @pfrazee.com this is super not OK. I know her- we've interacted a fair bit via chats and her work is essential.

Here’s my Election Night Hot Take: Democracy isn’t dead in the US. The People still have the power if we come together and wield it.

JD Vance’s brother lost. Tr*mp+ Musk endorsed Cuomo - he lost. Prop 50 passed in a resounding condemnation of Trumpism. They don’t control us. Our vote is powerful.

Something I try and tease out toward the end of the essay is how I think the ballroom isn’t just a symbol of authoritarianism but actually a weapon in cementing Trump’s power.
Moreover, it is designed to be an engine and not just an expression of his power.

How much further will he be able to entrench himself when he can operate his Mar-a-Lago court from the White House grounds?

The ballroom could tighten his grip on office and on the patrons he needs for staying there
