Anyone in Boston an immigration lawyer or know one who can help this woman? Her husband is detained at Logan over a dismissed misdemeanor from 2017. He’s a legal resident of the US. She just asked for help an hour ago.

Yes, when exponential growth is small, it can last a long time, but not as long as you would have thought and definitely not forever.

I've seen some popular media discussion of ‘inflection points’ in the context of the spread of epidemics, and that at least seemed to be used more or less correctly.

What jargon does media get wrong in a way that's jarring for you?

"Stat" doesn't just means fast, it means "there is a life-threatening circumstance and I need this to solve it." Nothing in a morgue is 'stat,' just 'asap.'

On a ship, "aye" means "yes." "Aye-aye" means "heard, and I will comply."
tobybartels.bsky.social
… how much there will be based on how fast it was growing, there will still be more than you thought; and if you extrapolate how much there will be from how much the growth was accelerating, there will still be more than you thought; etc. But all this might still be a very tiny amount.)

If something is ‘growing exponentially’, that doesn't mean that it's growing fast or there must be a lot of it after some time.

(What it does mean is that if you extrapolate how much there will be from how much there was, there will be more than you thought; and if you extrapolate …

Reporting to you live from War Ravaged Portland

I have a question about how they draw these boundaries. Is it ‹If you don't support the State of Israel then you're not a real Jew›, or ‹If you're not Orthodox or don't keep kosher then you're not a real Jew›, or what?

Not being on the ground in Portland, I don't have a strong opinion about whether it's a good idea. Sometimes dangerous sabotage is warranted. But it's a *serious* idea, not something to take lightly!
tobybartels.bsky.social
Ideally you'd make them *think* that you're going to shine lasers and then (just to be safe) not actually shine them, but that's a plan that's hard to pull off with a diffuse group of protestors, and pretty much impossible to pull off more than once.
tobybartels.bsky.social
I think that I understand how it's supposed to work now that I've seen this story about air ambulance operators refusing to fly where the laser party was planned. The goal is to make the feds also too afraid to fly in the area. Nobody wants a crash. …
OHSU says emergency flights will be diverted amid 'laser party' aimed at helicopters circling over Portland ICE facility
A "laser party" for those frustrated with helicopters' nightly flights over the South Portland area can have dangerous consequences for patients, OHSU warned.

This is happening right now, to a friend of mine in Chicago. This is a peaceful area, with no previous unrest or crime problem. Just people trying to live their lives. My heart hurts. They're having conversations no family should have to have.
A white box with text. "Y'all. They're tear gassing my neighborhood. Right by the place we get hummus from. Right by where we get the extra large pizzas for sleep overs. Tell your people."

ICE secretly kidnap autistic boy during bathroom break—never notify parents.

Mother reported him missing a week ago—turns out ICE had him detained the whole time.

He was helping sell fruit and asked to go to the restroom—by the time she was done helping a customer he was gone.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

The article is in a libertarian magazine, so I guess the writer is principled. But the commenters underneath … whoo! Pretty typical for that comment section unfortunately.

PS: I know this thread is almost five months old, but people have been reviving it at the top level, so I'm reviving it here.

And people do prove it, but they pretend that they're proving something only about +: that it's well-defined. But really it's a theorem about + and = just like the first theorem is a theorem about + and <.
tobybartels.bsky.social
With real numbers for example, nobody has any problem defining x<y and then proving neat theorems like x<y → x+z<y+z. But when you define x=y in a similar way, you can't then treat x=y → x+z=y+z as an axiom; it too needs to be proved as a theorem.
