"Did we always do this?" I ask.

"Do what?" Mark's lungs follow the percolation cycle exactly.

The machine stops. Everyone holds their breath. The pot finishes. They exhale together, relieved.

I unplug it. Twenty people gasp, choking on nothing.

"Exactly the problem," Left says.

She's recruiting my feet. By noon, my whole left side's on strike. I'm walking circles on the sidewalk, renegotiating with my own body.

Left demands Thursdays.

I agree, listing sideways into fairness.

"She says she's thinking." He pours coffee around her ankles. Outside, the Hendersons stand firmly planted in their yard. Mrs. Chen blooms by her mailbox.

"How long does thinking take?"

"Your grandmother took three years." He waters Mom's feet. "But she made excellent decisions afterward."

"Efficiency update," she explains. The nearest me waves with my coffee mug. "You're the original. Legacy model."

They type faster, smile easier. One's already gotten my promotion.

"What do I do?"

"Whatever you want. You're obsolete."

I watch them being better mes.

"Can I stay?"

"Sure." She shrugs. "They've been asking about you—wondering why the original doesn't feel quite right."

She hands me my burger. Extra pickles.

"I said—"

"I know." She looks exhausted. "But if I get your order right, someone else's anger has nowhere to go."

I bite into pickles I didn't want. The speaker quiets.

"The drain's slow swallow is learning," the plumber says, peering into my sink.

"Learning what?"

"Your patterns. When you brush teeth. Wash your face." He wipes his hands. "It's anticipating."

That night, I approach the sink. The drain gurgles before I turn the tap. Hungry. Expectant.

I brush quickly. It pulls harder, wanting more.

I step back. The drain sighs, disappointed.

My toothbrush sits on the edge.

Morning comes. It's gone.

The drain burps, satisfied. It's graduated from water.

I laugh until I notice—everyone holds exactly thirty seconds. Traffic stops. They cross, transformed. Taller. Younger. Different entirely.

"What did you wish?" I ask a woman.

"To be someone else."

The light changes. My turn. I press once, twice. Thirty seconds feels like choosing forever. I let go at twenty-nine.
