Great decision! Was all but a foregone conclusion but it’s good to hear it officially. Congratulations again!

For those who follow the Banzuke we have Midorifuji, Nishikifuji, Chiyoshoma, Shodai, Abi and Tobizaru who all have records that should land them at Maegashira 12. So it’s gonna be one of those sorts of banzukes.

Massive end. It’s all Aonishiki. The newest Ozeki! The next Yokozuna? It’s his world we just live in it! Hakkeyoi! Aonishiki YUSHO!!!!!

Very slick by Aonishiki. Still not quite sure how he did that. Into the Playoff. Hoshoryu will have to earn this. I reckon Aonishiki has ozeki for sure now.

With Sadanoumi losing again he will drop deep into Juryo, and that may be the end of his Makuuchi career. He is the last of a generation of Makuuchi stalwarts I always lumped together like Takarafuji, Okinoumi, Aoiyama, Kaisei, Shohozan, Ikioi and Myogiryu and now they’re all gone

*except Tamawashi

Asakoryu shows great recovery skills to beat Kotoeiho and hold onto a Makuuchi spot. Oshoumi beats Fujiseiun and the allegation of a possible hairpull to also stay in the top flight, he won 6 in a row to save himself.

Another good example of the dead body rule in effect today as Tochitaikai can’t execute the slap down of Tsurugisho before he flies backwards off the dohyo. Sure Tsurugisho lands first but Tochitaikai is adjudged to be a dead body and is correctly called out, even after a monoii

I’m confused. I’m hearing word Onosato is kyujo but he’s been put on the Torikumi. usually they hold off on matching on day 15 until after the day 14 matches to prevent fusen wins. Why was Onosato matched if he isn’t going to wrestle?

What a day of sumo. Sumo’s number 1 and 2 men knocked off by number 3 and 4. There will be 2 ozekis in January, neither will be kadoban. The top tier is bigger than we might have been thinking it was.

Oshoumi Makuuchi debut looked like an utter failure when he was 1-8 after 9 days. He’s now won 4 in a row and another win or two could see him hold onto a spot in the top division!

Takayasu has had a pretty entertaining basho and has had some close losses. Was great to see him win a very tough match today against a highly motivated Nishikifuj.

Tokihayate has has an incredible basho so far. With 9 wins from 7 different techniques I’m hoping he gets the technique prize.

Best day of sumo of the basho. some incredible matches, moves and turnarounds. The top guys continue to impress. Aonishiki needs one win for Ozeki. Kotozakura needs 1 win for kachikoshi. They’ll likely both face two Yokozuna then each other over the last 3 days.

Onosato’s first loss breathes life into this basho. He’s now tied with Aonishiki and only one match ahead of Hoshoryu so the three top performers of the year are with their own destiny in their hands. Kotozakura hanging in there for Kachikoshi despite struggling for fitness and form.

Juryo watch:
Gone: Meisei, Oshoumi
In Danger: Shonannoumi, Sadanoumi

Coming up: Daiseizan
Promotion Chance: Asahakuryu, Kagayaki, Asanoyama, Hatsuyama

Bad basho for the seas, good basho for the mountains.
November 18, 2025 at 12:22 AM
Sanyaku watch

Ozeki chance: Aonishiki
Kadaban danger: Kotozakura
In danger: Takanosho, Oho

Promotion chance: Kirishima, Yoshinofuji

Lot of key matchups to be had here. Lots of 4-5s in the high Maegashira who could come up. If Aonishiki is promoted that leads to an extra Sekiwake spot.

Another giant coming up is Kazuma. 185cm, 194kg. He’s 4-0 at Ms15 so 3 more wins will put him in Juryo in Jan. He burst onto the scene as a makushita tsukedashi and then got immediately injured but since coming back took Jonokuchi and Sandanme yushos and has only dropped a single match in 3 bashos.
