I just listened to “The Tainted Cup”, which is book 1 of “The Shadow of the Leviathan” book series. I immediately want to run it as a TTRPG.
Maybe in Trail of Cthulhu, although it is not really Lovecraftian; and I feel like there needs to be a way of accounting for items and enhancements to PCs.

Feeling successful after changing the strings on my Floyd Rose-equipped Reverend Vernon Reid sig guitar and switching to a Graphtech Unlock Nut… no more 😩 when jumping back to first position! Feels and sounds great!

I played a game based on the Free League Year Zero engine at a con, and the fact that they bake in RP tie-ins like Dark Secret, Buddy, etc. made it feel like old times of players making choices for both tactical and story reasons. The 'push' mechanic also ties RP in to tactics.

What I don't like about DCC is that it tends to minimize the idea that your character has goals and relationships beyond the player. Characters can die quickly, and the game focuses primarily on problem-solving and not story-telling. Exciting stories emerge, but they are about what the players did.

Other than the original batch of modules, which are chock full of ideas I'd never come up with, what I like about DCC is that 1) player agency is possible even with wildly random mechanics, and 2) the funnel makes the game begin and end _at the table_, and not in a 50 pg backstory.

After years of writing the RPGA Feature three-part character-provided event for Gen Con, I miss the power of building a group of characters whose personalities and relationships are as key to the play experience as the puzzles and challenges of the event. I like invoking player skill, but miss RP.
