studio execs & major outlets claim AI is "inevitable" and poised to take over Hollywood. the reality is much different. i spoke with filmmakers, producers, and editors about how AI is actually showing up in productions – and what it still can't do:

"Wouldn't you like a story exactly catered to you?"
"Ok I'm going to close my eyes and imagine for a while"
"Wait, that's not a subscription service-"
"Yeah, tough."

Everyone grows up thinking the stuff they were exposed to as a child was the best, but it’s a headfuck to’ve grown up with what may objectively really be the greatest filmmaker of all time scored by the greatest film composer of all time with posters drawn by the greatest poster artist of all time.

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years.

His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds.

A massive loss 💔

My hot take is that none of these are structure. These are all recipes that describe structure.

Structure is the Salt, Fat, Acid Heat of writing.

3-Act/Hero's Journey etc are recipes.

You can make great meals without using a recipe if you understand the principles of structure.

So #WritingCommunity how do we feel about structure?

Do you use the 3 act structure? The 5 act?

Hero's Journey? Save the Cat? Super Structure Method? Story Genius Method?

Something else?

What have you got?

I hear ya. TM got super greedy with “Official Platinum” prices for this. My favorite mid-bowl seats at the Forum were 2-3 times their usual price, so I went nosebleed. 🤷‍♂️

Okay, managed to secure Rush tix for friends and family. Everyone is sitting in a separate section 😅 but still!

Lots of music talk this week. The brilliance of Foxy Shazam, the return of Rush, the ethos (such as it is) of KISS, and a tribute to our fallen comrade Kerry Kompost, amongst all the usual nitwittery. As always, a good hang with my fellow spoonsters!

Spotted on a walk down Wilshire Blvd. The question is not addressed to me, but I’m gonna say… yes!
Looking down at a square of sidewalk, with grass to one side and a black shoe in the foreground. “God, is this art? -SHP” is written on the cement.

I won't go on & on about it. But what Dr. Demento put out into the world was special. It connected who knows how many people to music they didn't know they needed. to weird music. to big laffs, which we need. his final show will cost you three bucks, but it's priceless. 3/3 drdemento.com/online.html

Just now groking the symbolism. 🥺🥹

oh wow, the early reports are that the new Tron movie isn’t doing very well at the box office. this is wild, because the last Tron movie didn’t do very well at the box office, and also the very first Tron movie didn’t do very well at the box office and also neither of those first two were very good.
