One health response to global poultry production

In the last 20 years, global poultry farming nearly doubled, from around 17 billion chickens and other poultry birds in 2002 to 28 billion in 2022, a steady increase of about half a billion chickens and other poultry birds per year (FAO 2023).

If you had asked me two years ago if I thought there would be a panel on the extreme wealth line at the IMF/World Bank annual meetings, I would have said this was impossible. But now, look at this!

“While concerns over a potential pandemic threat to humans are understandable, this virus [highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1] is already a deadly epizootic in hundreds of avian and mammalian species.”

EU Parliament pushes for ‘veggie burger’ ban
Unbelievable we are in a climate crisis where meat production is a huge driver of carbon emissions and deforestation
And instead of promoting meat alternatives - they are trying to ban them

There are 31 commercial poultry farms (!) in a 10 km radius around the infected poultry farm, while the province of Drenthe is not the province with the highest poultry density in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands has by far the highest poultry density of all countries in the European Union (some island states excepted). Also, 5 of the 15 so-called NUTS2 regions (~provinces) with the highest poultry densities are in the Netherlands, including the province of Drenthe.

Poultry in the Netherlands are not vaccinated against HPAI, so the birds were unprotected. Broiler breeder farms are normally considered to have a high level of biosafety. However, a recent paper in 7 poultry farms in the Netherlands with a history of HPAI indicated low biosafety in 6 of them.

Today, 250.000 people took to the streets of Amsterdam to protest Israel's genocidal violence in Gaza and the cowardly response by the Dutch government. It followed on two earlier protests, one with 150.000 protesters, and the first one with about 100.000. By Dutch standards, these are huge numbers.

I've just finished The Care Economy by Tim Jackson and here's my review.

TLDR: I loved this book. Read it for a vision of the future that is full of hope.

Having read Tim Jackson’s other work, I was fairly confident I’d enjoy The Care Economy and be stimulated by its ideas. What I hadn’t expected was to love it. I should have known from the start—Jackson tells us this is a book “for people who don’t even like economics as much as for those who do.”

The Care Economy offers a vision for society that resonates deeply with my own values and instincts. Reading it felt like scratching an itch, with the relief of discovering that others share my hopes for the future. But Jackson doesn’t stop at instinct—he unpacks why we’ve ended up in our current predicament and how we might move forward to an economy that is care, rooted in the understanding that true wealth is health.

The book is woven with magic: stories, philosophy, facts, and thoughtful solutions. It’s a genuine page-turner—I found myself rushing to reach the end, the point where we implement its wisdom and begin living fulfilling, care-full lives. Book cover - The Care Economy by Tim Jackson

The artwork is a painted red circle - half is a solid line and the other half starts to break down a bit. This symbolises a state of active care that is needed to retain balance.
