This definitely tracks. The rejection in and of itself isn’t necessarily doing the damage, so much as the macro level societal expectations and perceptions associated with not appearing to be desirable.

I'm not sure but I think the key is decoupling self-worth from romance. Society has ingrained the idea of romantic relationships being a matter of worth in ppl when it really is a matter of compatibility.

I dare say there would be probably a lot less angst around romantic relationships if there was more focus on compatibility than worth. And the funny thing it often plays out a lot less to be meritocracy despite societal conditioning.

For now, I’m content just going with the flow, and if someone I’m interested in getting to know doesn’t consider that being serious or intentional about them then I just gotta charge that to the game.

Agreed that decentering yourself is the healthy approach when processing rejection, but it’s definitely easier said than done

And I’m of the mind that you form a much stronger foundation for a romantic connection by establishing a friendship first

But “intent” is pushed HEAVILY in dating culture

Yes and no.

A lot of Americans have main character syndrome real bad and it displays itself as egotism. I think it’s easier to internalize rejection when you approach the world that way.

We also need to deprioritize romantic connection as a culture.
