Mike Johnson: “I’d rather shut down half of the Congress than show you what’s in the Epstein Files.”

Folks on Mountain Project have done a good job keeping up on Charlie Barrett, a climber outed for bad behavior in the wake of the Me Too movement.

Outside Magazine asks the quintessential question here:

“How Did This Climber Get Away with So Much for So Long?”

It’s not just rock climbers that will suffer a bolt ban on public land - canyoneering will also be a more dangerous endeavor. Coalition of American Canyoneering has a statement on the proposed government changes for fixed anchors here:

On the eve of Ouray’s biggest event, the Ouray Ice Climbing Festival.

The local newspaper, The Plaindealer, has hundreds of copies stolen. The headline story for that week’s edition:

Girl: Rapes occurred at chief’s house

USFS and NPS are working on a policy of banning all fixed hardware in wilderness areas - this has the potential to upend how outdoor climbing works on US public lands. I’d encourage people to reach out to preserve access to safe climbing anchors in outdoor spaces.

We need your help to stop the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service from implementing a new policy that could erase America’s most iconic climbing routes and put our safety at risk.

Resistance Climbing is streaming for free through Reel Rock - it’s the story of Palestinians developing a rock climbing community in tough political and cultural conditions in the West Bank.

It’s fantastic.

Just like other service businesses across the US in recent years, the climbing gym industry is seeing some organizing efforts across several facilities and locations.

The Cliffs at Callowhill in Philadelphia looks to be the most recent.
NEW: 72 workers at a climbing gym in Philly are forming a union and joining Workers United; SEIU.

I keep forgetting to watch Andrew Bisharat’s film “Resistance Climbing”. It’s about Palestinian rock climbers in Israel / West Bank.

It looked like an interesting concept (I missed Reel Rock this year), and definitely topical with recent events.

Despite good access to climbing through online streaming, marketing and awareness remain a real hurdle for climbing competitions. In this regard IFSC World Cup is mediocre at best, and Olympic climbing is woefully under-marketed. Unlike "weekend sports", do people *know* the next climb comp dates?🧵
October 10, 2023 at 6:15 PM
I have a strong belief that a big part of rock climbing in the future won't be adventure enthusiasts finding it, but people discovering climbing through competitions. Climbing becoming a staple in the Olympics is going to be the "Free Solo" moment from the competitive side of climbing.
