That's a lot of words to say "This guy is the new hitting coach"
therick112.bsky.social
The fact that Vientos is being tied to first base off Pete walks means that no matter how much focus defense is getting, first base defense is not a factor in that.
therick112.bsky.social
Right and we agree on this, the next man up in most people's minds is Vientos, who is a downgrade both offensively and defensively. I'd take Petes defense in a heartbeat if Vientos is the alternative.

I'm not basing it on the Guerrero deal, basing it on what Pete wants and what the team wants and finding middle ground. He made $30m this year, his AAV won't be a pay cut.
therick112.bsky.social
If we want him to take less years the AAV would have to go up. At least $120, probably more $130-135.

You can point to everyone on the team for an error they made that cost them a single game in the micro. When you miss the playoffs by 1 game, that matters, and that's baseball. However, in the macro, it's obvious that the starting pitching is the culprit. How many games did Pete win with his bat?
therick112.bsky.social
Great point on Vlad.
therick112.bsky.social
I do think the defense is less an issue at first base. If people think Mark Vientos is a suitable replacement, they are kidding themselves.
therick112.bsky.social
I'd be less pissed if it was the Yankees. Just shows how still butt hurt they are about Soto. But the Yankees prefer left handed bats and they already have Judge and Stanton from the right side. Plus if they wanted to do it they would have been more in play last year.

Sure, less guarantee for aging players is always preferable, but to get a deal done both sides have to leave their comfort zone to reach the middle ground.
therick112.bsky.social
Agreed, but everyone knows this is where he fits best. It needs to be figured out.
therick112.bsky.social
I try to be reasonable and see both sides and come up with a solution. Got the idea from @qflea.bsky.social on the options so shout out for that piece of creativity in the structure.

#Mets
Re-sign Peter Morgan Alonso

5 years, $160m guaranteed, vesting option for year 6, cheaper team option if it doesn't vest, with team another team option for year 7.

Pete gets his 7, team gets out after 5 if production declines.
therick112.bsky.social
If they can work out an extension as part of the trade, yes.
therick112.bsky.social
Seems like it is, you say Pete wants 7, oh well, guess we should pack up and move on. That's ridiculous. What's the proposal to replace him? If you can't answer that, you figure something out.
therick112.bsky.social
I want a million dollars, doesn't mean someone will give it to me. His ask is a starting point for negotiations. Easy way to get to 7 to make him happy is to include vesting options for years 6 and 7 based on performance.
therick112.bsky.social
I'm not mad at Pete for answering a question honestly that did not shock anyone. I blame the dumb reporter for asking that question with the eye black still on.
therick112.bsky.social
Then throw in some deferred money to sweeten the deal. In no world does Pete Alonso leaving make the #Mets a better team.
therick112.bsky.social
Just because Pete WANTS seven years, doesn't mean this is where it will ultimately land. His ask is setting his ceiling in negotiations. The #Mets will counter with 3-4 and then they work to the inevitable 5 years with a vesting option for year 6 and a less expensive team option for year 7. (1/2)

Most of those guys signed before their age 30 season
