"Sitting in a tin can far above the world," yada yada yada. Smug bitches.

This reminds me that I am descended from a man named "Preserved Fish." His mother's name was "Grizzell Strange" and his wife's surname was "Cook."

Protestants are weird, man.

I learned early on that a lot of supposedly liberatory pedagogies were profoundly disempowering for me as an instructor.

Using social media to satisfy your humiliation kink is unprofessional.

About time the NYPD felt dread, rather than just causing it.

Were you drinking from a #GirlBoss mug when you wrote this?

This guy is, as we say in the crafting community, "knit-worthy."

We have armed secret police kidnapping people off the street based on the color of their skin.

When we win: we will haul them before a Senate committee. The masks will come off. There will be consequences.

You should've heard the women in my local yarn shop in Kentucky after Luigi Mangione killed Brian Thompson. Middle-class Karens saying "murder is never okay, but also...." and telling stories about people they know who've been abused by insurance companies.

People are ready for leftist politics.

"dracula complaining about the price of groceries" -- that's an incredible line

I can't believe anyone gives a fuck about virtue signaling in Our Year of Fascism 2025. What a stupid discourse.

We're living in the seventeenth year of the ongoing 2008 economic collapse.

By "what came next," I mean the GOP defunding higher education, the explosion of student loan debt, the collapse of the job market, the devaluation not only of higher ed and the humanities but also expertise, etc.

My working-class family had deep faith in the humanities. My parents wanted me to be a writer--not a doctor or a lawyer, a writer--and believed that an English degree would lead to a solidly middle-class career (spoiler: it did).

It's painful to remember that 1990s optimism, knowing what came next.

Something about this reminds me of how excited I was to start classes as a first-gen student at the University of Central Florida. My whole family was excited. My grandfather had a fourth-grade education, and I was going to Learn Big Things and Think Deep Thoughts. There was pride in that.

Just got back from Normal, IL for a lecture at Illinois State University. Established in 1857 after this small town lawyer named Abe secured the funding. Was reminded once again that US public universities are the triumph of civilization

Nah, bro, "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" is clearly about the feeling of telling your parents that you're going to go to Auburn instead of the University of Alabama.

In the early 1990s, scientists began developing genetic tests for hereditary diseases. Huntington's was one of the first, but no one wanted to take it. Carriers have a 100% chance of developing the disease. People didn't want to know, bc it's horrific and untreatable.

So this is a big big deal.

Petition to ban the phrase "I gotta hand it to [name fascist here]." No one gets a gold star for being decent or right once a decade.

Hey, that strategy served me well in grad school at department parties.

I'm not surprised. My sister works at a cancer center where staff are required to mask, but most do not take it seriously at all--masks pulled down off noses or looped around chins, rolled eyes, etc.

Infuriating.

These numbers are weird to me. I would think that 10-20% of children would end up being higher than 6 million.

Even so, 6 million is a huge number of kids with a disease for which there's no known test, clear treatment, or prognosis.
