Hello Bluesky!

I'm new here so I will introduce myself.

I'm an illustrator who loves to share my gardening adventures and nature journal sketches on social media and my blog, theheronandrose.com.

Peak flower season may be over, but the beauty of nature never fades. Seeing bees buzzing around my garden, especially enjoying the mint, fills my heart with gratitude and joy.

I'm starting to notice the autumn colours coming into the garden this weekend.

Spending the Summer outside taking pictures of nature was nice but I am looking forward to September. Cooler, darker days mean more time spent drawing. There’s something about the quiet shift of the season that pulls me back to the sketchbook.

Enjoying the beautiful sight of a busy bee collecting pollen from a coneflower as summer fades away.

I’m savoring the beauty of one of the last orange rose blooms in my garden this season.

The beauty of nature never fails to amaze me.

Scarlet runner beans and Hummingbirds make August the most magical time in my garden.

I am embracing a slow start to August to nurture my creativity with nature sketching and self care. It's important to make time for what fuels the soul.

Here are a few photos of my garden from July. Despite the high heat and dryness this summer, the garden is putting on a good show of flowers.

The house with the rough waves is my favourite. I can feel the movement of the water and gathering clouds as if I'm there.
I took this picture of a Shasta Daisy in my wildflower garden a few days ago after a morning rain. I find that sometimes the flowers that I enjoy most in my garden are the simple ones.

The red on these Shirley Poppies have such a vibrant red that they are hard to look at in full sun.

Doing a simple sketch that I work on a little bit every day until it's finished is a great way for me to de-stress and get my focus back.

This is a pencil sketch of a Downy Woodpecker that visits my garden.

A recent storm took out most of the flowers in my garden, but this low growing rose survived. This is its first full bloom of the season.

Today marks the summer solstice – a time to slow down, recharge, and appreciate the simple joys of life.

Take a moment to savour the beauty of the longest day and bask in the glow of summer's warmth.

It’s that time of year when I see a lot of fledglings out and about. I took this picture of a sparrow the other morning collecting mosquitoes to feed one of its fledglings hiding out in my wildflower patch.

I haven’t sped this video up. This bee just really loves this wild rose!

Today’s the first day I’ve noticed flowers on my Swamp Rose.

I left the garden for a few weeks, but I came back just in time to see the lupins I planted last year in full bloom! The bees visit these frequently.

Since it is Mother’s Day here today, I thought I would post this picture I took a few years back of a Robin giving their little one an early morning life lesson on how to get breakfast.

It is amazing how much the garden can change daily at this time of year. These tulips went from buds to beautiful flowers in no time. These are the peony flowering tulip variety.

A pencil sketch of a couple of finches that have started to become frequent visitors to the feeder now that Spring is in full swing. Their vibrant colours make me want to capture them in watercolour rather than graphite.

Here are my nature sketchbook pages that I have been working in April while researching moths and butterflies that are native to my region. I've never seen a Luna moth in but they are a nice green colour.

Thanks, I don’t know what’s going on with that. It says it uploads correctly then publishes black. I have tried a few times now. The photos work on my Instagram, so I think it's something with my Blue Sky account, maybe.
It’s been a while since I had time to work in my nature journal, but while I was researching native moths and butterflies in my local ecosystem, I couldn’t resist the temptation to do a few simple sketches.
