Here we see an inviting misty valley at dawn. This horizon provides an innate sense of comfort and it feels as though the mountains may scoop you up. You can sense the cool air and the peaceful silence of this scene. The mountains in the background are so high that the sunrise hasn’t yet peaked over. It is still crisp and dewy, the lake is extremely calm. The rocks are jagged poking out of the shoreline, causing a break in the forest. As the valley fades into the distance, milky pigments of titanium whites and smalt hues lead your eye onward.

As a Canadian artist, I wanted to capture the feeling of standing before Peyto Lake in Alberta, that sense of untouched wilderness and the pull of nature’s vastness. The viewer’s eye is drawn first to the evergreens in the foreground. Layers of clouds reflected in the turquoise water reveal a natural path, ringed by towering peaks. Nature feels alive here in the glacial swirls, the shifting light, and the deep forest greens that surround it.

That’s a thoughtful way to put it, Rachel. The birch bark really does feel alive, almost watchful, and that’s part of what drew me to paint them.

I use heavy body acrylics from Golden. They let me layer and build intensity while still keeping movement in the work.
