Today's #BirdoftheDay theme is #BirdsonTwigs. While on a birding trip in Central Oregon, a lot of birds loved these bare tree tops, allowing some great views and photos! #Nature #Photography #Birds #PNWBirding #Oregon

For the #BirdoftheDay theme of #Movement, here's an American White Pelican (one of the largest birds in NA) flying over a marsh out in Central Oregon. Although most people think of them as ocean birds, White Pelicans breed inland. #Nature #Photography #Birds #PNWBirding #Oregon

It’s time to hang up the holiday GAR-land 🎄

Move over Florida Man, it’s Florida Gar’s time to shine!

On Day 3 of #25DaysofFishmas, we head down to the Sunshine State to find the Florida gar (Lepisosteus platyrhincus), an ancient-looking fish whose appearance hasn’t changed much since the Mesozoic

It’s all about that bass on Day 4 of #25DaysofFishmas - the Suwannee Bass (Micropterus notius), that is!

We head to the Florida Panhandle to find this lesser-known cousin of the largemouth bass who is like the quiet - but interesting - cousin at the black bass family holiday get-together.

For yesterday's #25DaysOfFishmas, we had one of the most primitive eels around. Today, we've got quite the opposite - this is Cyema atrum, the bobtail snipe eel, a species so bizarre and highly derived from the eel body plan it barely looks like one at all!

Keep an eye on your #Fishmas tree - there’s a cat(fish) on the loose! 🎄🐈

Carolina’s on our minds here on Day 5 of #25DaysofFishmas, as we meet the Carolina Madtom (Noturus furiosus), a small - but mighty - endangered catfish species only found in North Carolina

Go tell it on the mountain - the Mountain Mullet (Dajaus monticola), that is! ⛰️

#25DaysofFishmas Day 6 takes us to the rainforests of Puerto Rico where this freshwater mullet species - also known as dajao or tepemechín - proves there ain’t no mountain high enough to keep from celebrating #Fishmas!

For Day 4 of #25DaysOfFishmas we have an animal that I'm low-key obsessed with. This snazzily dressed little fella is Protanguilla palau, the Palauan primitive cave Eel. As you might expect, this mysterious creature was first discovered (as recently as 2012!) in coral caves east of the Palau.

For Day 6 of #25DaysOfFishmas, we have a really quite important species - this is the milkfish, Chanos chanos. C. chanos is the only living member of the Chanidae family, and is a widespread and widely-consumed species across the Indo-Pacific.

For Day 3 of #25DaysOfFishmas, we have a really charismatic little fella. This floating clump of leaves and twigs is Pantodon buchholzi, the African butterflyfish. This is the only living member of the Pantodontidae, a family that was more diverse in the Cretaceous.

For this year's #25DaysOfFishmas we're going to go in roughly chronological order, from the oldest lineages of fish to the present. We're kicking off, then, with a truly ancient and utterly bizarre animal - this is the Queensland Lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri.

Rudolph, the red-eared reindeer! 🦌

With ears so bright, the Redear Sunfish (Lepomis microlophus) guides us into Day 2 of #25DaysofFishmas! This member of the sunfish family found throughout the southeastern US is a warm-water loving ray of sun on a cold winter day ☀️

There’s no better fish to kick off this year’s #25DaysofFishmas than the aptly-named Christmas darter (Etheostoma hopkinsi)! We get our road trip started down in the southeastern US with this small species of fish who has big holiday spirit all year long

Been a minute since I posted any #fieldwork pictures. These are from a new survey I did Tuesday. Kind of surreal, it follows old train tracks out along a river. There's houses at first, but then they fall away, and it's just you, the river, and the crumbling rail line. #Nature #Photography
