I hear you. More than anything, I'm stunned by their lack of critical thinking skills. They can get from Point A to Point B as long as there aren't any obstacles. At the first sign of trouble, they're at the desk, looking for help.

It's Book Quote Wednesday and today's word is 'gold' #BookQW
In the throes of her possession, Rachael is helpless against the demon's assault on her mind ... She parted her lips, but the daemonium sensed a shift in the power. It slithered through her memories to distract her, firing a montage of images into her brain. Helpless against the onslaught, all she could do was ...
… remember …
Her father stood in her bedroom door, a swath of moonlight illuminating his naked body … she burrowed beneath her covers and feigned sleep, but his hand found her breast and … Tanith came close, whispering of traitors and monsters in the night … do not fear them, they are not here, but … Mastema’s eyes are full of poison, don’t look in his eyes, never look in his eyes … where cracked mirrors fell from the walls, shattered and broken like her faith … and John stood over the Eucharist, stained-glass light bathing his robes in shades of azure, crimson, and gold … and he spoke of God, of God, God, God, God …

You can save yourself some money with this month's Kindle ebook offer for The Green Man's War.
Dan Mackmain's a peaceable chap, but after his experiences in last few years he's ready to meet trouble head on.

Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a lethal, pale-scaled serpent-dragon or wyrm lurking in woodland. It looks straight at you as its forked tongue flickers between open, sharp-toothed jaws.

Book extract reads: ‘This is some place.’ He stopped on the gravel to admire the manor.
He’s right. Blithehurst’s not huge but it is impressive. The limestone masonry has weathered over the centuries to soft grey or gold, depending on whether or not the sun is shining. The two floors have tall leaded and mullioned windows which look out over ornate gardens at the front, and across the valley to the wooded pastures on the other side of the river at the back. The steep roof has russet tiles which run down to fake battlements along the tops of the walls. Those are purely for show. This house was built to impress, not to be defended in battle.
The Roundheads had thought that meant they would easily seize the house from Eleanor’s Royalist, Catholic ancestors in the English Civil War. They were in for a surprise. The dryads got them so thoroughly lost that they never arrived. Not that any of the attackers could know what had really happened.

It’s always good to remember that some tales are better told as a short story than a novel, especially when I have so many other ideas demanding expression.

This small original painting is available in our shop while it lasts:

OUTLOOK (2025), Acrylic on Canvas - 12” x 9”. Framed original art in wood moulding with linen liner.

A boy rests on a ledge to peer out an open panel in a huge concrete facade that is divided into recessed rectangles. At the intersection of the concrete support beams, the cross braces rust over. Each rectangle on the wall contains a different shape (circle, hexagon, 8-pointed star) sealed and closing off the view outside. Below the boy, a panel tumbles down as he props his hand on the rusted metal frame. Beyond is blue-gray sky.
I feel this pain so deeply ... No one be alarmed if someone asks me how to print in the library and I run screaming into the woods ...
I am so fucking sick of having to teach my students how to save a file to their goddamn desktops.

I am sick of showing teaching them that there is a difference between .docx and .pdf. I am sick of teaching them how to upload a file. I am sick of having to teach them how to insert page numbers.

For Witch King and Queen Demon, some combination of the coppery tang of blood, dust from dry lands, cedar, the wildflowers of a grassland. (I could add decomposition and fouled water but that might put buyers off.)
What would *your* book smell like if you engaged in a mega weirdo scented pages promotional campaign?

Today I'm doing a talk about Women and the (early) Gothic and it might be time for a list!

So here are ten early women writers of the Gothic to give an idea of the range of things that women were creating in the period!

This book was a great read: thoughtful, rich worldbuilding, strong pacing, and an extremely believable core relationship that evolves over the course of the book. Get this one for cheap so you're ready for number two next month!

Working with my editor was the best part of trade pub, hands down.
An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Yeah, I was hoping for maybe some newly discovered facts about Gein or maybe some insight into why he did the things he did, but instead the whole series was nothing more than a victim exploiting foray into serial killers and their greatest hits. 0 stars
I watched Netflix's The Ed Gein Story so you wouldn't have to. I didn't realize so much fiction and torture porn could be stretched over 8 episodes of a "true" story, but Ryan Murphy managed it and it was the most godawful load of crap that I've had the disgust to watch in a long time.

APOTHEOSIS OF WAR (1992)
Acrylic on Watercolor Board - 20” x 19”

People often ask me, “Where do you get your ideas?”

I always have so many that I don’t think I’ll live long enough to paint them all...and if I ever experience a shortage, I just have to pick up the morning paper. 1/3
A white on black abstract rendering of the culmination of war. It stands with arms flung out as if declaring "look what I have wrought!" Horns sit upon its helm pointing up and outward in a slight arc. Eye slits sit high with a double opening between jagged cheek plates. The effect elongates the helm, an inhuman distortion that looks more devil than man. The collar and pauldrons are wide, overwrought and wickedly spiked. Open mouths scream from the underside, echoes of suffering or cries of bloodlust. The figure is skeletal with one bony foot exposed beneath long flowing tattered robes loosely wound with barbed wire. Lines across the fabric of its chest suggest ribs as if there's no other substance beneath but bone. The hands, however, are tense, anguished flesh with long curving nails as if saying the delicate instruments of war are all too human. Projecting like bladed weapons from each sleeve, the sleek heads of a dragon and a long-beaked demonic bird extend in a mockery of open arm
