Hoverfly of the day in Gamlingay Wood LNR, S. Cambridgeshire, an ancient woodland, only a 10 minute stroll from my home.

A male Criorhina floccosa, an excellent Common Carder Bee (Bombus pascuorum) mimic.
Localised in mature woodland with plenty of dead wood, in which the larvae breed.
these are the only still photos I could get!
Can any bee people explain what this bee is doing? She’s been almost hovering like this in front of our deck for 15+ minutes! I *think* it’s a carpenter bee but I’m not confident (SW Ontario)

We've just published some brand new insect migration research in iScience!

We found that Marmalade hoverfly migrants are marathoners, not sprinters.

The wasp mantisfly, Climaciella brunnea, is not a wasp, a mantis, or a fly. It is instead a type of spider-eating lacewing that keeps itself safe by looking like it has a painful sting, which is does not.

I have attached a link to a draft guide to identifying, recording, and rearing the most frequently encountered Hoverfly larvae found in winter leaf litter for the British Isles. Why not give it a go? entosurv.blogspot.com #Hoverflies #Diptera #LeafLitter

Definitely a syrphid! Probably a Eupeodes species:)
Last week I presented by preliminary data on #Syrphidae migration in #SWOntario at @entsocamerica.bsky.social ‘s #EntSoc24

It was such a great experience and I met so many incredible researchers!
