the state in which i was born doesn't have record of my birth parents being my birth parents because my birth certificate has my adopted parents' names on it. as you can imagine, this made enrolling in my birth father's tribe VERY. FUCKING. DIFFICULT.
i want people to understand that “open” #adoption does not mean an end to the erasure of identity that makes secrecy possible. almost without exception, finalization of an adoption still results in the issuance of a new or “amended” birth certificate in which the natal parents’ names are replaced. +
