Today's lesson from Broadview: Seems that churches can cross the line to feed state police but not to give Communion to the detained. (Salvation Army is a church.)

It’s dinner time for the police. Appears to be pizza from a Salvation Army van.

Broadview’s “free speech” curfew starts soon, at 6pm.

Father Larry attempts to walk toward the detention center.

ISP prevent people from moving forward. Lieutenant Col Bradley says he's making a call and dialing the ICE facility, but also says people may be waiting a while.

Sounds like a good sermon. Please ping me if you've got more than this snippet.

Religious leaders here are not mincing words. They have repeatedly used the word "evil."

"Detention and deportation are acts that wound the body of Christ, and deny the dignity of God's people."

Music now.

Grim reminder: people held inside the detention center have reported it's impossible to hear much coming from outside.

A group of hundreds of faith in coalition who started at a Maywood church just arrived at the detention center for a eucharistic procession.

They want to offer communion to detainees inside, but won't be able to get past the barricades and fence on Beach Street.

Outside of the Broadview ICE facility, a state trooper tells the delegation attempting to have communion with detainees that ICE has denied their request.

I’m not talking about the kind of thing you can photograph or advertise, though goodness knows religious imagery has been a major part of the wave of protest and dissent we’re seeing at the moment. It’s just this background thing that runs alongside everything else that’s going on.

I'll try to roundup coverage of today's Catholic-led Communion service at Broadview in a separate thread. (The march from St. Eulalia's in Maywood just recently kicked off.)

WOW: 1,300-year-old Byzantine bread! (Not nec. Communion loaf)
“With our gratitude to the Blessed Jesus.”
(This is one of the better stories; other coverage has been awful, calling Jesus the sower a "fertility symbol" and inscription "confirming the Bible.")

Thanks, David! Hadn't seen any of these yet except the NPR one on the pirate flag.

This was really well done. Very informative and revealing. And what a kicker! Thank you.

Reported chant from today's protest after the Communion service:
monicacarmean.com
Love your neighbors, love your God, save your soul and quit your job was my favorite!

Indeed.

Still can’t get over how based “the body of Christ will be free” is as a protest chant. I mean it has LAYERS.
tedolsen.bsky.social
Maybe? But I think the organizers have that less in mind than that Communion proclaims the reality of the suffering wrought by the powers of death and oppression, the ultimate defeat of those powers, and the gift of joining together both with the suffering and "in the triumph song of life."

Instagram post from yesterday by David Black, the Presbyterian Church (USA) minister who went viral for being repeatedly targeted by ICE with chemical munitions. www.instagram.com/p/DPnOQIODFP4/
Tomorrow morning, Christian clergy will be holding a communion service in front of the ICE Detention center in Broadview, IL. In our liturgies, we say that “they will come from north and south, east and west to sit together at the table in the Kingdom of God.” The communion table is a welcome table. All are invited.

A nation which prohibits the movement of the peoples to gather at that table is by definition obstructing our religious practice and infringing on our right to practice our Christian faith freely.

All are invited to join in this ancient ritual, which acknowledges the violence which an empire visited upon our Lord Jesus Christ. Yet his death and resurrection inaugurated the world we yearn for. The truth is that the Beloved Community is here—I see it gathering outside Broadview week after week to demand and exhort the release of our captive neighbors and their restoration to our communities, so that the Welcome Table of this Eucharist might be made whole. I hope you will join us. Tomorrow morning, Christian clergy will be holding a communion service in front of the ICE Detention center in Broadview, IL. Side note: lest you think this is a one-off, a sizable group of Catholic nuns, priests and lay leaders have announced plans to do the same thing — offer communion to detainees in the Broadview ICE facility — tomorrow.

NEW: Clergy are at the Broadview, IL ICE facility today — where clergy have been shot w/pepper balls in recent days.

UMC minister Rev. Hannah Kardon, one of those shot w/pepper balls in the past, among those asking to give communion to those detained. Attendees (who sent photos) say police declined

If anyone sees a lady in a cat onesie taking communion at Broadview on the news tonight lmk! (It’s me. I was in a cat onesie.) The Rev said: “this is the cup of heaven, poured out for you. Nice Malört shirt.”
I’m a cat.
