“We believe that, in obedience to Jesus Christ, its only head, the church is called to confess and to do all these things, even though the authorities and human laws might forbid them and punishment and suffering be the consequence.

Jesus is Lord.”

no, but that's a good shout! I'll poke around a little while longer - it's a casual curiosity, not a current liturgical need - but will definitely ask him next time we see each other, if not sooner

okay anglican choral tradition ppl: are there any choral anthems you know of that utilize the first part of the funeral reading from 1 Corinthians 15? Especially looking for something that includes 15:26. ⚓

and it's still up for debate whether it's worth it lol

no idea, I'm afraid. I'm working from a scan on course reserve, and the cover sheet doesn't include edition info

barth on faith as choice reminds me of some newman oxford homilies on the moral valance of faith contra "knowledge"

I think the kinds of thoughts she puts down on paper, and which her words inspire in me, are prayer! because they are thoughts of one encountered and loved, not thought of a concept, an idea and abstraction to be located on a chess board with other ideas and abstractions

"It can neither be substituted for them nor ranged with them, and, save with the greatest caution, it cannot even be compared with them."

"It is the Primal Origin by which they all are dissolved, the consummation by which they all are established. The power of God stands neither at the side of nor above-supernatural I-these limited and limiting powers. It is pure and preeminent and beyond them all."
mtrkdjoyce.bsky.social
"Being completely different, it is the KRISIS of all power, that by which all power is measured, and by which it is pronounced to be both something and-nothing, nothing and-something. It is that which sets all these powers in motion and fashions their eternal rest."
mtrkdjoyce.bsky.social
"It must not be confounded with any high, exalted force, known or knowable. The power of God is not the most exalted of observable forces, nor is it either their sum or their fount."

"...no divinity which NEEDS ANYTHING, any human propaganda (Acts xvii. 24, 25), can be God. God is the unknown God, and, precisely because He is unknown, He bestows life and breath and all things. Therefore the power of God can be detected neither in the world of nature nor in the souls of men."

to read him say, verbatim, "Christian Apologetics is meaningless" would have utterly blown my mind as an adolescent

I often wonder if I would not have had to wander so far if I had been offered something like this when I was detaching myself from the theology of my childhood church

an hour of study is only *sometimes* equivalent to an hour of prayer, I think. few theologians write in a way that produces genuine love for God in my heart and not just thoughts about God in my mind. Barth is one. (Sonderegger is another.)
mtrkdjoyce.bsky.social
the sheer scope of Barth Studies always intimidates me badly, because I am always afraid someone is going to chide or correct me, but I am reading a portion of his commentary on Romans for the first time and it is just SO good

I do not feel like the capacities of this particular laptop are constrained by it being linux instead of windows, I guess is what I am saying
mtrkdjoyce.bsky.social
and I think that I do normal things with my computer. the only thing it Not Does Very Good is gaming, but honestly I could probably do that on Linux too if I had a different laptop - it's primarily a hardware constraint; this old thinkpad could not run modern games as a PC either

getting my printer set up was hard but that's always a pain on any os
mtrkdjoyce.bsky.social
I use ZorinOS (linux) and my sound works and I don't have to talk to people about... the command line? drivers? I honestly do not know what the things are that the Linux People are talking about well enough to even come up with real examples

you too can be a normie Linux user with ZorinOS

genuine disagreement over definition, or over whose definition is salient in a given context, is a real source of disagreement! but not all disagreement over definition is "no true scot." it's fair play to point out a definition motivated by non-shared principles; less so to assert *logical fallacy*
