The CEO from the Chicago Sun-Times called me to fact check my part in finding the AI Generated Summer Reading guide.

My takeaway: its was very real learning experience for more the just Sun-Times. And if we want local media, we need to support local media.

Lessons (and an apology) from the Sun-Times CEO on that AI-generated book list
The summer section was intended to be a supplemental value to our subscribers alongside our own journalism. Instead, it detracted and distracted from our work.

Kicking off my long weekend with this absolute gem, DISAPPOINT ME by Nicola Dinan. This one is for anyone who has ever worried they’re getting left out of something they’re not even sure they want a part of (in this case, heteronormativity). #booksky

Said some more stuff about AI, particularly that whole "hey we let it make up a bunch of fake books and then we published that list of fake books in the real world as part of a newspaper" thing. At the blog. Enjoy! Or don't! I'm not your boss.
Repeat After Me: AI Doesn’t Know Anything
Yesterday, the Chicago Sun-Times (and then also the Philly Inquirer) published an issue of their newspaper that included an insert about fun summer things, and in that was a list of fifteen great s…

When I shared a screen capture of the OP with friends, several of them asked me (reasonably!) if it was real. I love that Tina has also demonstrated the importance of fact-checking and the (sometimes literal) footwork that can be necessary to verify sources in the age of AI. bsky.app/profile/tbre...
Yep- the bogus summer reading list from the Chicago Sun Times is real. Here I am with it from a few minutes ago.

Oh good grief. This is what happens when we devalue expertise. Journalists, Librarians, Booksellers, Writers, literally ANYONE WHO READS could have made a real list of real books that actually exist.

We are looking into how this made it into print as we speak. It is not editorial content and was not created by, or approved by, the Sun-Times newsroom. We value your trust in our reporting and take this very seriously. More info will be provided soon.

What in the actual Hell?
Writing is not a trinket for a newspaper to use to makeup books to fill page space. Its an insult to the writers mentioned and to their readers.
This is why we need strong copyright laws AND policies that don't allow AI to infiltrate our 4th estate
Of the books named on this reading list, Brit Bennet, Isabel Allende, Andy Weir, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Min Jin Lee, Rumaan Alam, Rebecca Makkai, Maggie O'Farrell, Percival Everett, and Delia Owens' titles are all books that DO NOT EXIST!!!

See Alt Text for more detail.

Only seen this photo shared by @tbretc.bsky.social, but it looks like the Chicago Sun Times had AI write about summer books…and it included some that don’t exist. Cool, cool. Could’ve paid me or someone else, you know? This is what I do. But yeah, go with AI slop. Do you.
