Brutal and heartbreaking.

These scams target the likely, vulnerable and the elderly. They prey on people who don't have much and take everything they can get.

I can only hope these people will be caught and prosecuted but the victims will never see a penny of their money back.

I was using the same 2024 article in videos a lil while back to cite that wealth inequality in Canada had reached record highs in 2024.

Fun update: there's now a 2025 article about how wealth inequality has reached record highs this year!

Wheeeeeeeeee
Developers may have eyes but once they see the incredible amounts of environmental assessments that will be required before any reuse is considered, it will kill those plans immediately.

The reality is GE will be a massive black hole in the middle of #PTBO for the rest of our lives.
A frustrating pause to another mid-rise development. It's so aggravating for these developers to put forward these ambitious plans and then just... fizzle.

Like we have so many empty properties in the downtown #PTBO area, somebody just build something already. You WILL make money off of it.
I'm very sorry that Jeff and his family have had to deal with this, that's awful.

I'm also very sorry that Alex Bierk got threatened to be carved up like a turkey. That's awful too.
Mayor Leal now mentions he received a death threat before, and that his family's been threatened.
I know each day we're slowly proceeding to the end of civilization but this may be the biggest harbinger of doom yet.
This is some "Tumblr is the next PDF" level nonsense.

Canadians living in #Ontario

I need you to fill all these out because Ford is threatening tenant rights in a way that could make many unable to be housed.

Hey Ontario. Please pay attention to this. It's fucking terrifying. As a renter I rely on rent control in order to, you know, LIVE, and this threatens to take it away from me and most people I know.

Write to your MPP. Call Ford's office. I don't even know what to think right now. Fuck Ford, man.
In particular, they want leases to no longer necessarily remain in effect indefinitely, so that landlords have more options for creating tenant turnover.

Current situation in left-hand column, proposal on the right:

Doug Ford’s office has already received over ten thousand emails in the last 24 hours, saying no Bill 60, which would enable landlords to renegotiate leases every year, and refuse to renew without cause.

Acorn Ontario is calling this proposal “Ford’s most dangerous act” and they’re right #onpoli
Dougie is probably hoping his tariff ad stunt will distract people from this.

Sign this petition. Email your elected officials. If Ford is allowed to kill rent control, we will see an apocalyptic wave of homelessness from people booted out by landlords so they can raise the rent.
This was the response from Lansdowne Place in #Ptbo after talking with two scared seniors who were scammed out of their money by the Bitcoin machine.

Unacceptable. People are being taken advantage of and the mall is profiting from it.
Shoutouts to the political parties that attended yesterday's #PTBO Pride Parade, the NDP, Liberals and Conservatives!
You have to wonder how much the city is spending on these useless shelters just so they have a legal defence that allows them to evict homeless people from parks.

It also makes you wonder how that money could be better spent on permanent solutions instead.
Huge waste of tax dollars sending police and staff to get the unhoused to move along, then a double whammy of paying for "shelter" space thats unused and unusable.

Here's an idea: instead of spending all this money bullying homeless people you use it to provide housing and make them not homeless?
Higher taxes. Huge amounts of debt. Who in Ptbo actually wants this new arena?

With cost of living skyrocketing, so many people out of jobs, this arena is bad business. It needs to be killed.
Riel asks how long the city would have to decide about whether the fall 2026 municipal election could include a referendum on whether we need a new sport and entertainment complex. Clerk John Kennedy says spring time would be the deadline.
And I get that, completely. Municipal budgeting is a delicate balance of portfolios. Ignore arenas and you get complaints. Same with roads.

That's why social housing is so miniscule in Ptbo. The complaints council would get if they diverted arena money to housing... which they absolutely should.
I've seen quite a few councils in my time and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a council where that complaint hasn't been pressed against them.

Also, you can consult with the community. You can get those opposing views. That doesn't mean they're obligated to agree with those opposing views.
What I found is that people constantly complain they're not being consulted but then rarely end up attending community consultation sessions. And they pay city staff to show up and listen to complaints from the same handful of people. 2/2
When I was a reporter I remember when people complained about the lack of consultation in Daryl Bennett's council. Therrien's council came in and promised a revamp of consultation. Went to some sessions and saw it was the same 10 people who showed up every time and always had been. 1/2
Agreed. This is desperately needed. My only hope is that more of these types of projects are approved beyond just East City.
But also can we get some of this development downtown? Im tired of staring at the Baskin Robbins pit. There are so many underutilized spaces downtown and East City isn't always going to be the trendy, cool place to build apartments.
I've had a lot of thoughts on high rise apartments over the past few years. I went from "Ptbo isn't the right place" to "well maybe smaller ones are alright."

Now? Build em. Build as many as you can. We won't see a significant drop in rent prices without them.
