3/3 Our results shift the paradigm: eyespot plasticity isn’t solely temperature-controlled but shaped by multiple environmental cues, including humidity & plant quality, that may be more reliable across regions.
tarunyumnam.bsky.social
2/3 In Mycalesis mineus, humidity directly affects eyespot size w/critical period in late larval & prepupal stages. But in Melanitis leda, it's indirect: humidity alters host plant quality, which in turn affects eyespots. These are 2 diverged species evolving under similar ecological pressures.

1/3 Excited that my final PhD MS is online! Big thanks to Ullasa (PI) (vanasiri.in) & collaborators Freerk and Urszula. Turns out humidity, not just temperature, plays a major role in butterfly eyespot plasticity. doi.org/10.1101/2025...

A great conference week @behaviour2025.bsky.social meeting new & old colleagues. Presented our work on butterfly seasonal wing polyphenism: influence of humidity+host plant quality & bird vision modelling of wing patterns. Glad to have received the Best Poster Award (+ a beautiful painting)!

We welcome the 2nd plenary speaker at #ABL2025. 🙌🙌

@anna-stoeckl.bsky.social‬ from @uni-konstanz.de‬ reveals how insect pollinators interpret floral patterns to guide foraging. From hawkmoth vision to neural templates—this talk will bridge behaviour, neuroethology & sensory biology. 🦋🪻

We have not done predation experiments as a part of this study; that’d be very interesting to do and build on the existing predation experiment studies

Thank you all for your help during the project and my lovely partner for being by my side during this PhD journey!

Our false head work is out! By analysing ~1000 #butterflies, we found many traits at posterior end of hindwings evolved correlatedly, likely forming a trait complex w/adaptive function to dupe predators into thinking these traits together are actual head!!

Our new paper is out. We point out that large brained (and often smart) mammals and birds have evolved very different distribution of neurons numbers in the brain.
This means that similar cognitive abilities have evolved in very different brains.
