Francis was the best Pope of my lifetime. He occupied the top of a powerful hierarchy while still challenging it. He provided a moral reminder of the values of decency, humility and empathy towards the vulnerable in a role, and at a time, where it easy to lose sight of those values.

Helpful thread on the steps on the process between the House budget vote today and the major cuts to Medicaid and SNAP that seem likely.
The House just passed its budget resolution, so reconciliation is now officially underway. This is their bill to destroy Medicaid and SNAP while cutting taxes disproportionately for the rich.
THIS IS VERY REAL and can be enacted even if all Ds vote no.

Data on deportations are not being published. The numbers DHS is telling the press aren't plausible. Transparency and accuracy of government statistics should be a top 5 issue, even with everything else going on.

Too much of what I'm reading focuses on whether individuals "should" be deported or deportable. The first-order thing is that there are due process protections immigrants have, even if undocumented and even if unsympathetic.

I've been following @daralind.bsky.social and @reichlinmelnick.bsky.social to understand the Mahmoud Khalil situation. A green card holder can be deported on foreign policy grounds without a crime, unclear if that process is happening. The chilling effect on political speech results either way.

Yes, this is a REALLY important exception to what I’ve said earlier about the Secretary of State’s authority — and as I was discussing earlier, could well be what happened here.
There IS a law which authorizes deportation when the Secretary of State PERSONALLY says the person should be deported.

But imagine how you'd feel if BLS reported 0% inflation. Legit independent economic statistics are absolutely essential and we shouldn't take them for granted.
