[ NEW TEAM PAPER ]

🦇🎤 Passive acoustic monitoring of 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘀 holds huge potential, but how do bat counts correlate with actual numbers? Which factors affect detectability? New metrics & models could revolutionize our understanding. Time to standardize protocols & share data! #BatResearch #Bioacoustics
Current frontiers in the passive acoustic monitoring of bats
Passive acoustic monitoring of bats is used in a growing number of studies in applied and basic research, from local to global scales. Despite the publication of good-practice recommendations, sev...

Large citizen science datasets are powerful tools for biodiversity science, but they may have biases. Nice new paper from @louisbackstrom.bsky.social et al. showing that for eBird and Birdtrack lists there is a tendency for rare species to be over-represented

So happy that the first chapter of my PhD has been published! We explored where women exist in tropical wild meat systems, what they do & why. Huge thanks to my co-authors and my wonderful supervisory team 🙌

🚨Women are central to tropical wild meat systems, yet too often overlooked🚨

A new paper led by @jasminwillis.bsky.social, Dr Lauren Coad, @orchiddelirium.bsky.social & @ejmilnergulland.bsky.social reviewed 334 studies across 54 countries, finding women occupy 36 roles, from harvesting to trade.

You read that right- there are now 1,500 official bat species known to science!
The Bioko pipistrelle (𝘗𝘪𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘦𝘵𝘶𝘭𝘢) was found on Bioko Island in Africa’s Equatorial New Guinea by former BCI Student Scholar Dr. Laura Torrent and her colleagues.
